The first thing gym beginners must learn is to perform exercises correctly. It’s the way to get the best results from your workout program and avoid injuries. But many people don’t know how to do exercises correctly and they end up doing them wrong. Here are a few common exercises that people often do incorrectly.

Squats

Squats are one of the most effective gym exercises and they’re great for targeting multiple muscles groups. However, they are also one of the moves that people often do wrong by arching their back or not squatting deep enough.

Lunges

Don’t let your knees bend past your toes because it can actually lead to knee injuries.

Push-Ups

Push-ups are also one of those easy gym exercises that look pretty straightforward, but we often do them wrong. Common push-up mistakes people make include placing the hands too wide or high, or not keeping the back straight.

Planks

The most important thing to think about when doing planks is to keep the spine in a neutral position. Try not to arch your back or lower your hips because this will put pressure on your spine and reduce the effectiveness of the exercise.

Thinking Your Body is the Enemy

Your fitness routine isn’t a battle against your body and you shouldn’t treat it like an enemy. If you give it too much to work, you can easily stress it out and then get frustrated because it’s not giving you the results.

Relying on Social Media to Set Goals

Other people you see on social media have their own bodies and fitness goals that don’t have to be the same as yours. Copying the diet or a routine of a famous influencer won’t necessarily give you their results, because you likely don’t know the whole story.

Choosing the Wrong Goals

It’s important to be realistic when setting fitness goals and to check in with your current state of fitness and health. It needs to make sense for you personally and if that doesn’t click, you probably won’t see the results you want.

Jumping on a box is one of the most common exercises not only in CrossFit, but also for athletes and many other fitness programs. These top box jump mistakes are the ones you need to avoid in order to prevent injuries. Once you get the basics it might even become one of your favorite exercises.

A Box That’s Too High

Jumping on a box that’s too high for you won’t do you any good. On the contrary, you can end up with an injury. You’ll be landing the wrong way, doing a very low squat, and maybe even damaging your knees. Try with a box that is not too high until you’ve practiced a good landing.

Jump Down

Another huge box jump mistake you might be making is jumping back down to the floor. This is a hard exercise, and all you need to do is learn how to jump up and land on the box. Jumping back down can also lead to injuries.

Bad Knee Position

If your knees cave in when you’re up on the box, you’re not doing it right. Your knees should be shoulder-width apart, and not touching. Also, you shouldn’t be landing in a low squat.

Avoid doing these rowing mistakes and you’ll see how many benefits you’ll gain from working out on this machine.

Don’t Aim For Speed

Most people think that the faster they workout on the rowing machine, the more effective it will be. This is one of the most common rowing mistakes you have to avoid. Make sure that you’re aiming for power and great posture while doing it.

Using Only Arms

Rowing is actually an exercise that targets several different parts of the body. Avoid using only the arms because it’s a mistake that can lead to an injury.

Hunched Back

Chances are you’ve seen so many people in the gym on this machine with a hunched back. Avoid one of the worst rowing mistakes by looking at yourself in the mirror and checking your posture while doing the exercise.

You Don’t Breathe

Holding your breath while rowing is never a good idea. Just like any other exercise, breathing in and out can only do you good. Exhale when you push back, and inhale during recovery. It will give you more strength to do the reps.

Pulling Too Hard

Instead of pulling too hard on the machine, you should also learn to push yourself with your feet. Balancing the use of different parts of the body is important and the way to use this machine.

It’s common knowledge that you need to exercise if you want to lose weight, but did you know there are ways in which exercising can prevent you from reaching your weight loss goal?

You’re Eating More

It’s easy to think that you can eat more now that you’re exercising, but don’t be surprised if your scale starts going up in a few weeks. It’s super easy to eat more than you burned off just because you feel extra hungry after an exercise, so avoid this trap.

Unhealthy Snacks

If you’re a beginner at exercising, you may be tempted by all the nutrition bars and vitamin waters marketed towards the athletes, but you often don’t actually need them. Remember that these products are often loaded with sugar and empty calories that you absolutely don’t need in your life.

You Live a Sedentary Life

Just because you spend an hour in the gym three times per week doesn’t mean that you’re allowed to sit for the rest of the time! Use every opportunity you get to move around and burn a few dozen extra calories.

Foam rollers are the ultimate way to beat sore muscles. The faster you recover, the sooner you can back to training again with full force. In the past few years these items have become a staple not only in gyms, but also in therapy places, hospitals and more. If you already own one, we wanted to point out to the foam rolling mistakes you have to avoid.

Don’t Do It Too Fast

Take your time when rolling. Going too fast will not get you the results you’re expecting. Also, make sure that you don’t spend too much time on the painful areas and knots. They do require attention, but you want to roll everywhere.

Avoid The Lower Back

You might be tempted to use it on the lower back, but that is one of the biggest foam rolling mistakes you can do. It’s completely safe for the upper and middle parts, but when doing it on the lower back, you can cause damage to the spine.

Contract And Relax

Foam rolling will be even more successful if you contract and relax the muscles while doing it. This is a great tip to nurse the muscles back to life, because you will additionally be activating them and increasing the blood flow.
