While individual needs and preferences will certainly vary, in general, morning is regarded as the best time of day for exercise. Working out upon waking has been shown to increase metabolism and provide a boost of energy that can have a positive impact on the entire rest of your day. Stretching, in particular, can also improve circulation and loosen stiff joints caused by lack of movement throughout the night. If you tend to wake up feeling tight, read on for some simple, yet effective stretches to help you start your day on the right foot.

Cat-Cow Stretches

Waking up with a stiff back is a common occurrence that can be a real pain in the… well, you know. Cat-cow stretches are an excellent way to release tension and wake up your spine. On a cushion or yoga mat, stand on all fours with your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Inhale and begin to slowly arch your back, lifting your tailbone and chin. Exhale as you round your spine, tucking your chin and tailbone like a cat. Continue to flow between the poses for 5 cycles, syncing your breath with each movement.

Standing Forward Fold

To relieve a tightness in the lower back and hamstrings, stand on your mat with your feet hip-width apart. Breathe in, then slowly begin to fold forward at your hips as you exhale. Continue until you feel a mild to moderate stretching sensation in the backs of your legs, bending your knees slightly if needed. Place your hands on the floor or grab opposite elbows and relax into the stretch. Hold for 3 deep breaths, then slowly roll up to standing.

Child’s Pose

Child’s pose is another effective way to ease discomfort in the lower back, hips, and shoulders for those who prefer a gentler stretch. Using a yoga mat or folded blanket for support, kneel with your big toes touching and knees spread apart. Sit back on your heels, then reach your arms forward and lower your chest to the ground. Rest your forehead on the floor and breathe deeply, holding for 10-15 breaths.

Ever wondered how pro athletes start their days to set the tone for success? Beyond the intense training and game days, their morning routines play a vital role in their achievements. Discover the morning rituals that help these athletes kick-start their days on the path to victory.

Early Bird Gets the Gold

Most athletes are early risers, embracing the peaceful moments before the world wakes up. This time allows for focused preparation and mental clarity.

Hydration Boost

Hydration is key. Many athletes kick off their day with a glass of water to rehydrate after a night’s sleep, aiding digestion and overall well-being.

Nutrient-Rich Breakfast

A wholesome breakfast fuels their bodies. Think complex carbs, lean proteins, and healthy fats that provide sustained energy for intense training sessions.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Mental strength is as crucial as physical prowess. Many athletes incorporate mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to center themselves and enhance focus.

Dynamic Stretching

To prevent injuries and optimize performance, dynamic stretching helps warm up muscles and increase flexibility before rigorous workouts.

Visualizing Success

Visualization is a powerful tool. Athletes visualize their upcoming game or event, picturing themselves excelling and achieving their goals.

Personal Care

Self-care matters. From cold showers that invigorate the body to a skincare routine that protects against environmental factors, athletes prioritize their well-being.

Review and Plan

Setting intentions for the day is crucial. Athletes often review their training schedule, goals, and priorities, ensuring a structured and productive day.

Family Time

Many athletes cherish quality moments with loved ones. Whether it’s breakfast with family or a quick call, these connections bring joy and balance.

Gratitude

Starting the day with gratitude fosters a positive mindset. Athletes reflect on their journey, accomplishments, and the opportunities ahead.

How long is your morning routine? For Deepak Chopra, it’s two-and-a-half hours. The wellness aficionado is known for his practice of transcendental meditation, Ayurveda, and other alternatives to traditional medicine. His holistic approach to health is not only focused on the body, but on the mind too.

The Chief Wellness Officer for the Institute for Integrative Nutrition conducts his morning routine between 6 AM and 9 AM each day. Here’s what it involves.

Take a Moment

It is hardly surprising that Chopra would practice meditation soon after waking up. He engages in meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises, and his wife Rita joins when she wakes. “I practice body and breath awareness while asking myself, ‘How can I have the most joyful day?’” he says.

Get Your Caffeine In

Chopra likes getting his full caffeine fix before midday so that the stimulant has worn off by bedtime. He opts for 2 to 3 cups as research shows that coffee mitigates against 5 types of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Walk It Off

The 79-year-old knows the value of getting in his steps and typically takes 2-hour walks with his wife. “We walk a minimum of 10,000 steps. Usually, it’s 20,000, or 5 to 10 miles,” Chopra reveals. Take the time to explore a new neighborhood, or collect your thoughts while strolling through a park.

Tell us if this sounds like you. You wake up, get ready, make a cup of coffee, and down it before dashing out of the house. Or perhaps brewing is not your thing and you prefer to pick up a barista-quality cup on your way to work. What both scenarios have in common is that it involves having coffee for breakfast — and nothing else.

Coffee is Not a Meal Replacement

Yes, coffee can be a good thing. Caffeine gives us an energy spurt, it’s full of antioxidants, and some people say it helps keep them regular. But what it is not, is a meal. Having coffee on an empty stomach can make you feel its caffeinated effects quicker, but it adds very little nutrients to your diet. Not the ideal way to start a day. Breakfast should consist of protein, healthy fat, and high-fiber carbs to keep your blood sugar, energy, and productivity levels steady.

Coffee Can Make You Anxious

Coffee can also hike up your anxiety levels if there is nothing in your system to balance it out. We are definitely not telling you not to have a cuppa Joe in the morning. All we are saying is, please don’t let it be the only thing you’re having in the morning.

It was David Henry Thoreau who said “an early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day”. And we are here to agree with him! Start each morning with a power walk and you will feel the benefits all day long. Here’s why.

Boost Your Mood

Getting outside first thing in the morning can do wonders for your mental well-being. Being out in nature, breathing fresh air, and getting to watch the rest of the world wake up is always a happy way to start the day. Plus, you can listen to your favorite mood-boosting podcast or playlist.

Improve Your Fitness

Power walking is great for improving stamina, flexibility, and strengthening your muscles. It can also help with healthy weight loss goals and is a super satisfying way to get your exercise for the day done before 9 am! Be sure to walk briskly for at least 30 minutes 5 days a week.

Feel Energized

Studies show that people who take a morning walk feel more energized and have more mental clarity and focus during their working day. So put down your phone and coffee, pop your trainers on, and head out the door instead!

Improve Your Posture

Sitting all day at a desk can be very harmful to our posture and can often lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain. Walking each morning is fantastic for your bone and muscle health and helps to reduce aches and pains. Doing some stretching after your walk will also help avoid that bad back.

Are you envious of people who manage to get to the gym at 6 a.m. and work out before you have even opened your eyes? How do they do it? Well, they have a nighttime routine, which requires them to go to bed early and be up early and refreshed ready to exercise. Having a routine can help you fall asleep around the same time every night, making waking up early less of a chore and more motivating. Here’s how to create a nighttime routine to help you get up early.

Mediate or Stretch 30 Minutes Before Bed Time

Put your phone on do not disturb, turn off the TV, and start relaxing your body and brain. This is a great time to meditate or do some light yoga stretching. It will help get your body and mind ready for sleep, not racing about what you just saw on Instagram.

Prepare Tomorrow’s Breakfast

Make sure you have something easy but filling for breakfast before you work out and overnight oats are a great option. They take a matter of minutes to make and can be taken with you.

Choose Your Clothes

In order to save extra precious minutes of sleep time, choose your sportswear the night before. Having to make decisions in the morning is hard, so make it easier on yourself and just set out the clothes you want to wear in the evening. You won’t need to think about it.

For some of us, squeezing in a morning workout before starting the day sounds near impossible. But making the most of your mornings doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to wake up at the crack of dawn. This great cardio routine only takes 10 minutes to complete and it doesn’t require any special equipment.

Squat Thrust

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms by your sides.
  2. Lower into a squat position and place your hands on the floor.
  3. Kick or step your legs back into a plank position.
  4. Jump or step your legs forward to return to a squat position.
  5. Return to the standing position.

Plank Hip Dip

  1. Start at an elbow plank position, then slowly rotate the spine to lower your left hip just above the floor (about one to two inches from the ground).
  2. Return to elbow plank position.
  3. Now repeat the movement on the other side.
  4. Continue to alternates sides, allowing your hips to arch slightly in the middle as you transition from side to side. Keep your core engaged throughout.

Lateral Lunge to Single Leg Hop

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Take a big step to the right side with your right foot, and immediately bend your right knee, send your hips back, and sink into a lateral lunge, keeping your left leg perfectly straight.
  3. Push off your right foot and as you bring your right foot back to the starting position, hop up on your left foot, without placing your right foot on the floor.
  4. Land lightly on your left foot, and immediately lean into another lateral lunge on the right side.

Working out in the morning can do you a lot of good, but it takes time to figure out how to do it right. If you’re struggling to make the best out of your morning workouts, avoiding these common mistakes will get you there.

Not Getting Rest

It’s pretty difficult to give it your all at the gym when you haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep. Hit the hay early if you’re planning to work out first thing in the morning and give yourself enough time to rest properly.

No Prep

Being prepared for your workout in advance won’t make it any less exciting. Picking your activewear, packing the gym bag, and even prepping your breakfast will give you the motivational boost you need early in the morning.

Skipping Breakfast

Speaking of breakfast, you should never skip it, even if you’re planning a morning sweat session. Fueling for your workout is a must, and eating a tiny snack or two goes a long way.

Rushing Things

If your schedule is so packed that you’re trying to rush your workout, it’s probably better to leave it for some other time. You’ll be tempted to skip the warm-up and be too distracted to stay motivated, thus sabotaging your workout progress.

Many of our favorite Hollywood stars have a pretty intense morning routine and it turns out that Jessica Alba is no different. She recently gave us a sneak peek of her morning routine on Instagram, and it turns out she likes to stay pretty busy and active after leaving the bed.

The most important details about Alba’s fitness routine are revealed at the very beginning of the video. She’s shown putting on her special spin shoes, getting a pair of headphones, and hopping on her home exercise bike.

Judging by this video, her busy schedule isn’t stopping the famous actress and Honest Beauty founder from doing an intense SoulCycle workout every morning. This time around, she tuned in for the class of the Brooklyn-based instructor Claire J, known for its hot beats and infectious energy.

SoulCycle isn’t the only thing that Alba can’t do without early in the morning. A cup of coffee is also an essential part of her morning routine, and she usually brews it in her Nespresso machine with a drop of oat milk. Once her coffee is done, the famous actress tends to enjoy it with Honest Beauty’s Prime + Perfect Mask on her face before getting ready for her day.
