How long is your morning routine? For Deepak Chopra, it’s two-and-a-half hours. The wellness aficionado is known for his practice of transcendental meditation, Ayurveda, and other alternatives to traditional medicine. His holistic approach to health is not only focused on the body, but on the mind too.
The Chief Wellness Officer for the Institute for Integrative Nutrition conducts his morning routine between 6 AM and 9 AM each day. Here’s what it involves.
Take a Moment
It is hardly surprising that Chopra would practice meditation soon after waking up. He engages in meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises, and his wife Rita joins when she wakes. “I practice body and breath awareness while asking myself, ‘How can I have the most joyful day?’” he says.
Get Your Caffeine In
Chopra likes getting his full caffeine fix before midday so that the stimulant has worn off by bedtime. He opts for 2 to 3 cups as research shows that coffee mitigates against 5 types of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Walk It Off
The 79-year-old knows the value of getting in his steps and typically takes 2-hour walks with his wife. “We walk a minimum of 10,000 steps. Usually, it’s 20,000, or 5 to 10 miles,” Chopra reveals. Take the time to explore a new neighborhood, or collect your thoughts while strolling through a park.
