Waking up with a stiff neck is a common problem that many of us face at some point in our lives. Stiff necks can be caused by a number of factors including poor sleeping posture, sudden movements during sleep, or even stress. The discomfort and pain that comes with a stiff neck can be a real hindrance to your day, making it difficult to turn your head or even carry out normal daily activities. While it may take time for the muscles to loosen and heal completely, there are some simple things you can do to help alleviate the pain. Here are a few we find especially helpful.

Try Gentle Stretches

Gentle neck stretches may be the most helpful way to relieve tension in the neck so that you can start to feel better. Start by dropping your chin towards your chest and holding the position for a few seconds. Then, slowly tilt your head back and look up towards the ceiling. Repeat this movement for three to five rounds, breathing deeply.

Apply Heat

Heat is another great way to relieve tension and reduce pain. Place a heat pack on your neck for about 15-20 minutes to soothe any sore spots and help improve blood circulation in the affected area.

Do Some Yoga

Certain yoga poses such as downward-facing dog and cat-cow movements are ideal for stretching and strengthening the muscles in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Incorporate these poses into your daily routine to relieve any existing stiff neck and to prevent stiffness and pain from coming back.

Do you ever experience neck or back pain after waking up from a rough night’s sleep? If so, then some simple stretches may help you not only alleviate this pain but also provide you with an energy boost to take on the day. Here are some effective stretches to help you get an energized start to the morning.

Child’s Pose

Go down on all fours and tuck your knees up into your chest. From there, sit up and reach your arms out before placing them on the floor and stretching out as far as you can. This movement will stretch out your hips, pelvis, thighs, and spine.

Cobra Stretch

Lie on your stomach and place your hands next to your chest while ensuring that your elbows remain tucked in at your sides. Push up from the ground gradually, lifting your shoulders and chest while keeping your lower body still. This deep stretch is ideal for loosening your lower back and shoulders.

Neck Rotation

For this one, you can stand or remain seated. Start by looking straight ahead and dropping your shoulders. Once relaxed, keep your chin slightly lowered as you tilt your head back as far as you can without feeling any pain. Return to your original position before doing the same on the left and right sides. This routine should help you to alleviate neck pain and increase mobility.

If you’re stressed often or struggle with anxiety, it’s not unlikely you feel the physical effects of that in the form of tight muscles. It’s incredibly common especially to hold tension in one’s neck or shoulders, which can lead to pain and even headaches–which can make you even more stressed. To help break the cycle, here are some stretches to try to release some tension.

Side Tilt

To help with the sides of your neck, stand or sit with your spine straight and your shoulders relaxed. Slowly tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear toward your shoulder. Only go as far as it takes to feel the stretch, and don’t flex your should or raise it. Hold this for 5-10 seconds, then switch sides. If you want a deeper stretch, gentler push your head further down with your opposite hand–but not too hard! It’s good to pair this with…

Seated Clasped Neck Stretch

To help even things out so you’re stretching out the back of your neck as well as the sides, you’ll want to stretch your head forward as well–and this stretch is extra good because sitting will get you a nice stretch throughout your back as well. Sitting with your spine in alignment, clasp your hands behind your neck and gently pull your chin down towards your chest. Breathe deeply several times while you hold the stretch.

Levator Scapulae Stretch

Finally, this stretch will get the spots in between the sides and back of your neck. Turn your head to one side, then use the hand on that side to pull your head down toward your shoulder. Hold that stretch for 30 seconds or several deep breaths.

The computer era and the fast lifestyle often results in stiff neck and shoulder muscles. How to ease neck and shoulder tension, you might wonder? Check it out down below.

Acupuncture

If you aren’t afraid off needles, then acupuncture is the perfect form of alternative medicine for you. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, in which thin needles are used to stimulate certain points on your body.

Get a Massage

When is the perfect time for a massage? It is always the perfect time to treat yourself. Relax, deep-tissue or therapeutic massage, the choice is yours, as long as you de-stress yourself from your everyday problems and things that cause your neck and shoulder muscles to get stiff.

Have a Relaxing Salt Bath

Fill your bathtub and add Epsom salt which is amazing for muscle pain and reducing any chances of infection. Soak yourself for 10-15 minutes. However, you must keep your face out of the water to prevent over-heating.

Drink Celery Juice

Celery juice will help repair nerve damage, so join the trend! A cup of freshly squeezed juice will help reduce your neck and shoulder pain.

Neck pain may not seem like a big deal, but it can prevent you from doing some of your favorite exercises because there’s a high risk of injury. It doesn’t mean you should just sit around until the soreness fades away, and doing a couple of easy exercises could help you fight the pain.

Neck Tilt

Side to side or up and down – no matter which variation you choose, tilts are your go-to exercise. They are extremely easy to learn and can do miracles for your neck pain. Just tilt your head down, up or to the side, depending on which version of this exercise you picked. It’s crucial to hold your head in place for 5 seconds, before returning to starting position and repeating the move.

Neck Turn

Neck turns are also one of the easiest exercises on the market, and they’re pretty similar to tilts. Just like the name suggests, they consist of turning your head to one side, keeping your chin at the same level, holding the position and repeating the same thing a couple of times.

Neck Stretch

You’ll do this exercise by pushing your chin forward, stretching your throat and holding the position for five seconds. You’ll repeat the same routine while pushing chin backward, and do the same move a few times more.
