Gym memberships are expensive, home equipment ain’t cheap, but at least running is one affordable way to exercise, right? While generally speaking, running is indeed free, it’s essential to wear proper shoes to prevent injuries, and supportive, well-made sneakers can come in at up to $150 a pop. Over time, the cost of running shoes can seriously add up, and while it’s not recommended to settle for cheap alternatives, there are certain ways you can prolong the life of your shoes to save money while keeping your feet protected.

Rotate Between Pairs

While this method may cost you more money upfront, alternating between two or more pairs of running shoes can make a significant difference in how long each pair lasts. The force placed on the insoles as your feet hit the pavement can cause them to get squashed down, and rotating between pairs gives the foam time to decompress. It’s also important to wear breathable, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry, as the moisture from sweat can also cause shoe materials to break down.

Hand Wash

Washing machines use agitation and hot water to remove dirt and odors from clothing, but when it comes to shoes, they can weaken the glue bonds and damage the material. Smelly as your shoes may be, avoid the temptation to toss them in the washing machine and opt to clean them by hand instead. Gently scrub off any dirt with a soft brush or damp rag and remove the insoles to air them out separately.

Consider the Terrain

Abrasive surfaces like concrete, asphalt, and uneven trails provide little shock absorption and can put stress on the outsoles of your shoes, potentially causing them to wear out faster. To keep your shoes in tip top shape, limit your runs on these surfaces and stick with synthetic rubber tracks, treadmills, or even grass.

As avid runners, we know how much of a difference your sneakers can make toward getting the most out of a run. They’ve got to be comfortable, lightweight, and provide just the right amount of support. We also know that even the perfect sneakers won’t stay perfect forever—the average pair can only be worn for about 500 miles at most. A lifetime’s worth of sneakers ultimately ends up creating a lot of waste, and while we don’t recommend running in worn-out shoes for safety reasons, we do think it’s worth replacing old pairs with sustainable options when possible. Read on to learn more about some of our favorite sustainable sneaker brands.

Allbirds

Allbirds is a Certified B Corporation, meaning they meet a set of exceptionally high standards of transparency and accountability. Their shoes are made from natural fibers derived from trees and wool, and all of their products are shipped in recycled packaging.

Lane-Eight

For runners who prefer a sneaker free of animal products, Lane Eight offers shoes made from recycled polyester and an algae-derived foam. Designed to be high-performance and versatile, they’re a great option for athletes who need shoes for more than just running.

On Running

On takes sustainability to the next level by producing sneakers made from a bean-based plastic. This material is not only environmentally-friendly to create, it can also be recycled almost indefinitely. The brand even offers subscription services for serious runners who run through shoes faster than they run through finish lines.

When you book a vacation it’s common to think about what food you’re going to eat and how much time you’re going to spend sunning yourself on the beach. If you’re a regular gym goer, a week of vacation without any movement can seem scary. So here are four ways to stay healthy and active while on vacation.

Run or Walk

Take the time to see the city you’re in by running or walking—you get to see and feel places you wouldn’t normally if you chose a car or bus. Get up early, lace up your sneakers, and take a lovely long walk or leisurely run through the city. Pick a destination to go to so you have a purpose as well as being active.

Pack Gym Clothes

The easiest way to make sure you stay active on vacation is by bringing your trusted gym clothes with you and keeping them in a place you will see them daily. This will remind you to do something active each day, whether it is a jog or using the hotel gym, or yoga in your room. You have no excuses as you have everything you need with you.

Plan the Restaurants Before You Fly

The best way to stick to some sort of routine whilst on vacation is to be organized with your meals. Instead of playing it by ear, make sure you know what restaurants are around and what food is available so you can plan accordingly. Just because you’re on vacation does not mean your healthy lifestyle has to stop.

Wear Comfortable Footwear

If you’re going to a city that requires a lot of walking, then make sure you are always wearing your most comfortable footwear. Having blisters or just being generally uncomfortable is going to limit how active you can be that day.

If your workouts have a little bit of everything, you need sneakers that are versatile. This is where the cross-trainer sneaker comes in. These sneakers grip the floor and have sufficient traction, stopping you from sliding around. Here are the best cross-trainer sneakers for your workouts.

The Cloud X 3

The Cloud X 3 sneakers are great for all types of workouts because they are really supportive and have high shock absorption. This brand behind the shoes creates sneakers that are light and flexible for strength training as well as cardio.

Hylete Circuit II Cross-Training Shoe

The Circuit II Cross-Traning sneakers by Hylete are the most supportive and they come with three insoles that you can swap out depending on what activity you are doing. They’re really comfortable for every workout and have cushioning in all the right places, protecting your feet at all times.

No Bull Wild Rose Trainer

No Bull sneakers are really popular in the cross-training community and they come in a variety of styles and colors. You’ll even want to wear them out of the gym. There’s a guard plate which is a 360-degree shield around your foot, so they’re a little bit stiffer than other sneakers, but just as versatile.

However you prefer to work out, it’s important to have proper equipment in order to keep yourself from getting injured, and in many cases, this means wearing the right sneakers. Except for a few activities like swimming and yoga, sneakers are a very versatile piece of workout gear that can be worn for everything from CrossFit to Zumba, so it makes sense to choose a pair that you know you’ll be comfortable in and will hold up well over time.

You don’t have to spend a fortune—cost isn’t necessarily indicative of quality when it comes to sneakers. If you’re a serious gym-goer, however, you may find it worth investing in a more expensive pair. Here are some of our favorite sneakers at every price point.

Athletic Propulsion Labs Techloom Breeze – $220

These would definitely fall under the category of “splurge,” but they’re as popular as they are among athletes and celebrities for good reason. They’re incredibly lightweight and comfortable, yet provide the perfect amount of support for walking, running, biking, and more. All Techloom shoes are unisex, so be sure to double-check sizes before you order.

On Cloud X – $140

Still a bit of a splurge, but slightly less pricey, On’s Cloud X shoe is great for any type of workout but especially comfortable and supportive for running. They provide a nice amount of traction and are also quite durable, so you shouldn’t need to replace them as often as other running shoes.

Skechers GOrun Razor 3 – $50

For under $100, you can’t go wrong with any of the sneakers in the Skechers Go Run line, but we especially love the Razor 3. They’re lightweight and comfortable enough to wear all day long and are available in several fun colors for both men’s and women’s styles.

Some gym-goers think it’s ok to train in the same pair of sneakers they’re wearing on a daily basis, but this habit comes with several downsides. Here’s a couple of reasons why you should have a separate pair of shoes for your trainings at the gym.

Perfect Fit

Your regular shoes are designed for low impact, casual, activities and that’s why most of them aren’t really fit for a workout. Unless you’re wearing high-performance shoes on a daily basis, they won’t adapt well to all the demanding exercises you’re doing at the gym.

Longer Lifespan

Once you finally find a pair of street sneakers you like, you’ll want them to last. Wearing them at the gym will not help you prolong their lifespan, since you’ll put more pressure on them than you usually do, and they won’t last as long as you’d like them to.

Keeping it Clean

Even if your street sneakers happen to be fitting for a workout, you should still change into training shoes for the sake of others. You’ll be tracking in all kinds of dirt if you wear your regular shoes at the gym, making it more difficult for the staff to keep the place nice and clean.
