In this day and age, there are about a billion different ways to receive guidance in the world of fitness. You can choose to sign up for a gym and hire a trainer—or you can opt to work out at home and follow any of the multiple different online YouTube fitness gurus. These influencer types promote their work on social media, hoping to gain a following, but also seeking to help out individuals looking for mentors. But should you go this route?

Like so many other things in life, deciding whether or not you should follow a fitness instructor on YouTube really depends on what kind of person you are. Because as helpful and knowledgeable as so many of these online instructors can be, it’s not always prudent to receive guidance from them.

Some people require a bit more of a hands on approach, for a couple reasons. One, an online instructor won’t always hold you accountable when you miss a day—and that can throw you off if you haven’t established enough self-conviction in yourself yet. Two, some people just respond better to in-person training. The only way to know for sure is to try it out, and see how you respond. If you start to see success from following a YouTube instructor, then clearly it’s right for you!

If you’re looking to train your abs, there is a huge variety of exercises to help you achieve your goal. However, not all ab exercises are created equal. The five exercises below were proven to be extremely effective in training abs. They stimulate a lot of abdominal activity and stimulate your muscles more than other standard exercises. Give them a try if you really want to see results.

The Plank

  1. Place your hands directly under the shoulders (slightly wider than shoulder-width) as if you’re about to do a push-up.
  2. Ground your toes into the floor and squeeze glutes to stabilize your body.
  3. Bridge up and position your body in one straight line. Pull your abs in tight and hold for 30-60 seconds.

The Bicycle Crunch

  1. Lying on your back bring your knees up to a 90 degree angle and keep your hands by your temples
  2. Crunch up and twist across the body while simultaneously performing a bicycle motion with your legs. When you crunch up to the right, draw your right knee in and vice versa. Repeat for 20-30 reps total.

Reverse Crunch

  1. Lie on your back with your hands tucked under your bum with your knees bent.
  2. Bring your legs up to a 90-degree angle from your torso.
  3. Pull your knees in towards your chest, squeeze, and slowly lower to starting position. Repeat 15-20 reps.

We’re typically less active during winter, so spring is the time to increase the intensity of workouts again. The nice weather can motivate you to go out and do your best, but be careful not to injure yourself trying to continue in the same way you did at the end of last season. Here are some tips for getting back into shape this spring.

Go Slow

Start by working out every other day and get some rest in between workouts. Don’t fall into the common trap of going hard during the weekend and doing nothing for five days, as that’s the best way to get an injury.

Stop If You’re In Pain

Muscle soreness after a period of inactivity is normal, but if you feel stronger pain or if your soreness doesn’t go away, stop and see what the problem is. Listen to your body and consult a specialist if needed.

Work Out With Other People

If you have a chance, work out with someone else who’s at your fitness levels. You can motivate each other and make sure you’re on the right track. If you work out with someone who’s more fit, you may feel more motivated, but there’s also a risk of injuries if you overdo it.

Whether you’re training to stick to a fitness routine, lose weight, tone your body, or get healthy, it’s important to stay safe and healthy. With these tips, you can train smarter and avoid injuries in the future.

Fuel Correctly

Just because you train hard doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want. A poor diet will affect your athletic performance so make sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies and foods that are rich in carbs and protein.

Take Rest Days

Balance is of extreme importance when training because you don’t want to push yourself too hard. Take at least one or two rest days a week to help your body recover.

Strength Train

Strength training is not only for people who want to build muscle. Even if you’re a runner, you still need to strengthen your muscles and bones in order to prevent injuries and improve your overall performance.

Stretch

Stretching and improving your flexibility will help avoid injuries and it releases muscle tension after an intense workout.

Listen to Your Body

Last but not least, listening to your body is the best thing you can do to train smarter and achieve your fitness goals. Don’t feel guilty for taking a rest day if you’re exhausted, don’t train if you’re injured, and take time to recover after intense workouts.

If you’re hitting the gym every single day and don’t take time to rest, or if you’re constantly sore and have trouble sleeping, these can all be signs of overtraining. Pushing yourself too hard can sometimes be a bad thing, so here are some tips on how to recover after overtraining.

Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep is very important for our health, especially for people who work out on a regular basis. One of the best ways to help your muscles recover after you’ve overtrained is to get enough sleep.

Introduce Recovery Days

Rest days are just as important as exercising, so don’t make the mistake of skipping recovery again. Take at least two rest days every week and give your body time to recover after workouts.

Healthy diet

Sticking to a healthy diet plan is important if you want to recover and refuel your body after intense workouts. Introduce foods that are rich in protein and carbohydrates, eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, and make sure to drink enough water.

Relieve Tension

Sore or weak muscles are one of the most common symptoms of overtraining. Massages, hot baths, and light stretching on a daily basis can relieve muscle tension and help your muscles recover faster.

Most athletes like to use the off-season as a time to take a break and rest from all their games and competitions. However, this time of the year can also be a great opportunity to work on your skills. Here are a few reasons why off-season training is important.

Staying active

The most important thing to do during the off-season is to rest, both physically and mentally. However, the worst thing you can do for your health and performance is to spend days laying in bed or sitting. Regular training will help you stay in shape and feel better when the seasons starts.

Focus on other sports

Trying different sports and activities during the off-season is the best way to have some fun. It can also activate different muscle groups, as well as prevent injuries and a potential “burn out”. For example, runners could focus more on their mobility and upper body strength during the off-season.

Improve your skills

Make a list of your fitness goals and things you’d like to improve, and then try to accomplish that. The off-season can be a perfect time to work on your strength, flexibility, and mobility, because all these things can improve your overall performance for the next season.

Adding intensity to your home workouts will not only make your routine more interesting, it can also boost your performance and give you better results. Here are a few ideas on how to make your workout routines more intense.

Reduce Rest Time

HIIT workouts are so effective because they combine intense exercises with short periods of rest. Reducing your rest period to 30-60 seconds is a good way to improve performance and burn more calories.

Use Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are not that expensive and they’re very useful for making every bodyweight exercise a bit harder. They’re versatile and very effective when it comes to building and toning muscles.

Slower Reps

You don’t need special equipment to make bodyweight exercises more demanding, when you can just use slower tempo. These are called time under tension workouts (or TUT) and they’re very effective because the muscles are under tension for a longer period.

Switch Up Workouts

There are a few reasons to switch up your workout routine every once in a while and boosting the intensity of your training is one of them. Your body needs to work harder when adjusting to new exercises and you’ll build new muscles and burn more calories at the same time.

So you’re hitting the gym every single day in order to build muscles and increase your strength, but for some reason, that’s not happening? Here are three reasons why your strength training is not producing the results you want.

You Only Do What’s Fun

We have a natural tendency to only do what we’re good at and what we love. Unfortunately, that’s not going to help us achieve our fitness goals. So next time you hit the gym, if you hate push-ups or deadlifts, start your workout by doing a few sets of these exercises.

You’re Not Eating Enough

Take some time to think about your diet and ask yourself are you eating enough? Not having your diet in check is a common mistake among newer lifters. Food is the fuel that gives you energy to get through all those hard workouts and eventually build strength.

You’re Stuck on the Same Program

Following the same workout routine for more than two or three months is not a good idea because your body is getting accustomed to a particular exercise over time. This means your workout program that proved very effective in the beginning, won’t bring the same results after a certain period of time.

Boxing is a great way to develop your physical and mental strength. It’s not reserved for young men and the very strong and it can be practiced by anyone of any age and any skill level. Here are five reasons that boxing should be your new sport of choice.

Whole Body Workout

Boxing is a wonderful way to work out all muscles in your body. It requires strong arms, core, and shoulders as well as quick, nimble legs.

Enhances Dexterity

The trick to being a good boxer is being quick and nimble. Boxing will train your body to react quickly and decisively.

Builds Confidence and Determination

As you continue to box you’ll see yourself developing and finding easy what you used to find hard. Not only does boxing make you feel good, but it can also build your confidence by developing your self-worth and it can help you feel powerful and assertive.

Social

Another important feature of boxing is its social aspect. You’ll be taught how to box by your teacher alongside fellow students. This can help you feel part of a team.

Balance

Boxing can be a better way to improve balance than gym machines. When you’re boxing, you have to become good at weighting your body to trick and dodge the moves of your opponent.
