Experts recommend taking 10,000 steps a day to keep your body on the move, but can you imagine doing it in total silence? That’s exactly the idea behind “silent walking”, the latest mindful fitness trend taking TikTok by storm.

Unlike some of the previous workout trends that emerged on TikTok, “silent walking” isn’t that hard to embrace and you don’t have to be a fitness expert to give it a shot. This term can be defined as a regular walk that doesn’t involve any distractions – such as listening to a podcast or music on your phone.

Mady Maio, who came up with this term and helped it trend on TikTok, admitted that the idea of walking without any distractions made her anxious at first. She decided to give it a shot after her boyfriend encouraged her to do so and realized it’s actually pretty amazing.

“Something happens after two minutes, where your brain just gets into this flow state and everything is quiet, and suddenly, you can hear yourself… After 30 minutes of silent walking, I suddenly had the clarity that I had always been looking for — brain fog lifted,” she explained in her viral video.

Walking became one of the biggest fitness trends during the last year, as more and more people realized the health benefits of the simple activity we do every day. One TikTok user, Mia Lind, realized all this and so she created a movement to encourage people to start taking more steps. So far, the #hotgirlwalk hashtag has well over 600 million views on TikTok!

So how exactly does one perform a Hot Girl Walk?

With fitness wearables on the rise, many people these days like to keep up with their daily step count. 10,000 steps a day seems to be the most common goal, but how many steps do we really need to take each day to maintain optimal health and wellbeing?

The Research

A 2011 research study showed that healthy adults can take anywhere between 4,000 and 18,000 steps each day and that 10,000 steps is a sensible target.

However, new research suggests that only 8,200 steps per day (around four miles) is enough to help prevent common health problems such as sleep apnoea, heartburn, reflux, obesity, and depression.

Having said that, the study also showed that the risk for many health problems continued to decrease as the number of daily steps went up past the 8,200 mark.

The Verdict

While there is no exact science behind the 10,000 mark, research DOES show that walking four miles+ each day can be very beneficial for physical and mental health.

Some easy ways to incorporate more walking into your day are to do several mini walks if you don’t have time to do all your steps in one go, take the stairs, suggest walking meetings to your colleagues, and do catch-up walks with friends.

Walking became one of the biggest fitness trends during the last year, as more and more people realized the health benefits of the simple activity we do every day. Not only can it reduce the risk of heart disease and improve weight loss, walking is also quite meditative, meaning it aids your mental health, too. 

One TikTok user, Mia Lind, realized all this and so she created a movement to encourage people to start taking more steps. So far, the #hotgirlwalk hashtag has well over 600 million views on TikTok!

So how exactly does one perform a Hot Girl Walk?

It involves walking outdoors, indoors, or on the treadmill for four miles. During this time, there are 3 key things that you should be thinking about. 

Gratitude

With fitness wearables on the rise, many people these days like to keep up with their daily step count. 10,000 steps a day seems to be the most common goal, but how many steps do we really need to take each day to maintain optimal health and wellbeing?

The Research

A 2011 research study showed that healthy adults can take anywhere between 4,000 and 18,000 steps each day and that 10,000 steps is a sensible target.

However, new research suggests that only 8,200 steps per day (around four miles) is enough to help prevent common health problems such as sleep apnoea, heartburn, reflux, obesity, and depression.

Having said that, the study also showed that the risk for many health problems continued to decrease as the number of daily steps went up past the 8,200 mark.

The Verdict

While there is no exact science behind the 10,000 mark, research DOES show that walking four miles+ each day can be very beneficial for physical and mental health.

Some easy ways to incorporate more walking into your day are to do several mini walks if you don’t have time to do all your steps in one go, take the stairs, suggest walking meetings to your colleagues, and do catch-up walks with friends.
