A new year is upon us, and many of us are looking forward to the holiday as an opportunity for a fresh start. While it’s true that plenty of people give up on their resolutions by the end of January, we’re of the belief that adopting healthy habits is always worth a try. Some practices, such as hitting the gym, remain popular year after year, but there are also plenty of new wellness trends that we’re excited to try in 2024. Read on to learn more about them.

Sleep Syncing

Sleep syncing involves aligning your sleep cycle with the natural rhythms of the sun and moon to optimize your circadian rhythm. Research suggests that this can benefit both mental and physical health by improving the quantity and quality of sleep you get over time. To try it for yourself, start by establishing a consistent sleep schedule that includes going to bed and waking up at the same hour each day, and consider using a tracking app to monitor your sleep patterns.

Digital Detoxes

As much as we love our tech, there’s no denying that too much screen time can take a toll on our mental health, and if current trends are any indication, it seems we’re not alone. More people than ever are turning to timers designed to restrict media usage in favor of mindlessly scrolling for hours on end. Make the most of your newfound free time by spending time in nature to fully disconnect and recharge.

Probiotics

We’ve all heard a thing or two about the importance of “good bacteria” for gut health, and from the looks of it, prioritizing probiotics is one trend that’s here to stay. Sales of probiotic drinks such as kombucha are on the rise, but you don’t have to drop big bucks on fancy beverages to reap the benefits. Filling your diet with probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, tempeh, and sauerkraut is just as effective for those looking to support a healthy intestinal microbiome.

Whether during work, mealtime, or just hanging out, sitting on the floor may not be the most conventional arrangement, but it can actually provide a range of advantages for both physical and mental well-being. In fact, this simple practice is currently seeing an explosion in popularity among the wellness-minded on social media, with #floortime currently at over 19 million views on TikTok. From improved posture and flexibility to an increased sense of groundedness, read on to learn more about some of the surprising benefits of going sans chair.

Improved Core Strength

Sitting on the floor engages the abdominals and back muscles as they work to maintain an upright position without the support of a chair. This constant activation helps to strengthen these muscles over time, leading to improved posture and reduced strain on the spine. Additionally, sitting on the floor encourages a more natural spinal alignment, which can alleviate back pain caused by prolonged chair usage.

Increased Flexibility

The act of sitting cross-legged or in other floor-friendly positions promotes the stretching and lengthening of muscles and connective tissues. This can lead to improved hip, knee, and ankle flexibility and increased joint mobility, which is especially important for older adults and those looking to maintain a greater range of motion.

Enhanced Mindfulness

There is a reason that many meditation practices are traditionally performed in a seated position on the floor. By sitting closer to the ground, we establish a stronger connection with our environment, allowing us to feel more present and centered. This can help to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance concentration.

In 2020, health and wellness trends took center stage as we needed productive ways to cope with the pandemic. After finding excuses not to implement these self-care practices in our lives for years, we finally had the time to make these lifestyle changes. In 2021, these wellness practices will continue to be a huge part of our lives as we try and get through the pandemic. Here are three trends you should start incorporating into your lifestyle.

Mindful Eating

In 2020, we had more time to cook healthy meals, and many of us became home chefs. When cooking at home, we started paying attention to what we were eating. What you eat plays a huge role in your mental and physical health, so try and cut out processed foods and replace them with foods with nutritional value.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Now that you’re spending more time at home, you can finally try new healing techniques like using essential oils and drinking herbal teas.

Meditation & Breathwork

With gyms closed and visiting friends more challenging due to social distancing restrictions, it’s time to try other ways to manage your stress. Meditation and breathwork allow you to stay in the present moment and relieve any anxiety you are feeling. When trying these practices, remember to be patient and not to judge yourself as it takes time and patience to stay present.

This year has been challenging and difficult for everyone and what makes it even harder is that what’s going on around us is completely out of our control. But, even though things are unpredictable, there’s one thing that you can control—self care. The latest health and wellness trend is micro habits that involve making smaller more sustainable lifestyle changes. These are the ones you should try out.

Be More Active

It’s hard to get the motivation to run outside or do an intense cardio session, so instead, try and move your body in any way you can. Aim for physical active three times a week and try and not go two days without any movement.

Make Your Bed

Start your day off right by making your bed. This will give you a sense of accomplishment even if you don’t end up doing anything remarkable the rest of that day.

Stay Hydrated

Try and drink more water throughout the day to stay energized. You should aim for 90 ounces and to make it easier, carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go.

Eat Your Greens

Eating more greens will help you feel healthier and it’s as easy as adding a handful of spinach to your breakfast smoothie. Starting off with this change in the morning will encourage you to eat healthier during the day.

Stay Connected

If you feel isolated during this time, know that you’re not alone. To feel more connected, call or text a friend or family member daily.

Heath and wellness trends are constantly changing and before we know it, there seems to be a new fashionable diet. But, some trends are all hype and not actually healthy. These are the five trends that are worth trying.

Unplug

Instead of detoxing your body, try detoxing your mind by putting down your electronic devices. We’ve all heard that using cell phones before bedtime can negatively affect your sleep, but they can also make you anxious, especially when you consider all the coronavirus news lately.

Forest Bathing

No, you’re not actually bathing in a forest, you’re just walking in one. Spending time outdoors reduces stress and blood pressure while improving your mood.

Plant-Based Diet

We get that cutting meat isn’t for everyone, but eating a plant-based diet can reduce your risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer and it can help you lose weight.

Recovery Tech

Working at a desk all day long and then lifting weights at the gym, your body gets achy. It’s important to take care of them with foam rollers, massage guns, and compression therapy.

Self-Care

Self-care is a movement dedicated to being the best version of yourself and showing yourself love. It can include physical activity, getting a manicure, or booking a massage.
