If you are not in a position to own a gym membership or take exercise classes, you probably work out at home. However, it can be tricky to find the motivation to stick to your training program when you know there’s laundry to be done or dinner to cook, or even just another episode of your favorite Netflix show waiting for you. Follow these top tips to say goodbye to distractions and work out successfully at home.

Schedule a Time

Calendar your at-home workouts into your day, as though it’s a class you’ve signed up for. This creates accountability. If you have a phone reminder that you need to work out between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., you’re much more likely to do it, rather than having a vague sense that you’ll work out “at some point today”.

Find Workout Videos You Enjoy

Use Instagram routines, apps, and of course, YouTube videos to help guide you through your workout. Find content creators that speak to you and ‘shop around’ for routines that work for you.

Dress for the Gym

10 minutes before you’re due to begin, dress in your gym clothes so you feel prepared for your session. Clear a space for your mat and pop your favorite work out playlist on. In other words, create a mini gym in your home and don’t exercise in your jammies.

No Equipment, No Problem

You don’t need a Pilates machine and a set of free weights before you can start working out at home. You can use filled water bottles as weights, towels as yoga props, and other household items to aid in your workout. Or, simply choose exercise routines that don’t require any equipment at all.

We love practicing Pilates whenever we’re looking for a low-impact way to tone up and build muscle. Pilates has been shown to build core strength and increase flexibility throughout the whole body, and it’s great for learning how to breathe more mindfully as well. It can be really fun to take Pilates reformer classes in a gym with a professional instructor, but sometimes we just don’t have the time.

When we’re looking for a simple and effective Pilates mat workout, one of our favorite places to go is the YouTube channel Move with Nicole. She has tons of videos available for whatever workout we’re looking for and explains everything in an easy-to-understand way. Here are a few of our favorites.

Chloe Ting is YouTube’s queen of epic workout challenges, and she’s truly pushing boundaries with each one. She dedicated the first week of August to her “Shred Challenge” which can help you take your abs routine to a whole new level in just two weeks.

Ting kicked off her latest challenge by sharing two brand-new videos with her followers. The first one features a 15-minute full-body routine that you can perform with no equipment, while the second mostly consists of abs exercises and can be completed in just 10 minutes.

The fitness influencer shared a full calendar for this fitness challenge on her Instagram, which includes both brand-new workouts and old classics that are already available on her channel. She’ll also share a 10-minute workout that targets upper body and core and a full-body routine that will take 25 minutes of your time.

Two weeks may not feel like enough to get the abs of your dreams, but it’s a step in the right direction. On her official website, Ting explains it’s okay to do this challenge for a whole month if you wish to, as long as you add rest days to the mix and replace some videos from the original program to add more variety to your routine.

Personal trainer Massy Arias recently shared a new video on her Youtube channel in which she shows a 10-minute cardio workout with a jump rope that’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t have time for working out. As she told POPSUGAR, her preferred training for weight loss includes circuits with minimal rest between sets of exercises. She loves how circuit workouts help her combine cardio and strength training. “It allows me to do both at the same time,” she says.

The video you can see below is a 10-minute HIIT circuit that combines jump rope and bodyweight exercise, 30 seconds at a time. “On a day you have very little time to get moving and workout and/or the weather isn’t cooperating to do cardio outdoors, this routine is an incredible way to maximize your time and burn calories,” Arias writes in the video description.

The video provides very short rest breaks, but if you’re a beginner and need more rest, you can always pause the video until you’re ready to continue. Low-impact workouts can be just as effective as the more intense ones. They also have some advantages in the fact that they’re easier on your joints and they’re typically quiet so you can do them in your living room and not disturb the downstairs neighbors. Here’s a recent workout video published by Johanna Sophia that only lasts 20 minutes but allows you to get in shape with minimal effort.

“This is one of my favorite low impact workouts to date, and it got me sooo sweaty,” she writes in the video description. “We are walking at home, but this workout is going to get your heart rate up and you’ll be burning lots of calories and burn fat!!”

Sophia has been on a weight loss journey and has lost more than 50 lbs by moving for 20-30 minutes per day, five times a week, as she writes. She promises that daily workouts and mindless eating can help anyone achieve their ideal weight and health.
