5 Jump Rope Mistakes Every Beginner Should Avoid

We’re all looking for a dream workout routine that’s fun, easy and can be done anywhere at any time. Rope jumping is all that! All you need is a good rope and you’re good to go… Or are you? No matter how effortless it may seem, rope jumping still leaves room for mistakes, but you could avoid them by following these five steps.

Pick the right rope

If you want to make rope jumping part of your daily routine, it’s important to pick a rope that will make things easy. Avoid cloth ropes and go with straight plastic instead. When it comes to the length, the bottom of the jump rope handles should come up to your armpit.

Don’t go too high

Beginners feel the need to jump high so they wouldn’t trip, but that’s not the only way to reach for the stars. It’s better to bounce just an inch off the ground because you won’t get tired as quickly.

Find the right surface

Rope jumping can place stress on your feet, ankles, legs, and knees – that’s why it’s important to avoid surfaces that will make things even worse. Always pick an even surface, ideally suspended wooden floor at your local gym, but try avoiding concrete.

Use your wrists correctly

This may sound pretty obvious, but many people swing their arms to spin the rope. Your wrists should actually do all the work – grip the rope firmly, keep your arms tight to the body and you’re ready to go!

Avoid the double bounce

Most beginners do that small half-hop in between each rotation of the rope. The problem with the double bounce is that it slows your rhythm. You can stop doing it by pausing in between jumps and getting used to doing a single bounce that way.
