Wherever you practice, a proper yoga mat is essential. Most studios and gyms offer mats for public use, but if you’re practicing yoga regularly, owning your own mat can be a more hygienic alternative. Beyond a color or pattern that you like, your yoga mat needs to match your personal needs. Here’s what to look out for when picking a yoga mat.

Thickness

The thickness of your yoga mat has a lot to do with how comfortable it is. A standard yoga mat is about ⅛ inch thick, vehicles the thickest are about ¼ inch. The thinner the mat the easier it is to transport. Consider how much room you have to stow your may, and where is your sweet spot for comfort versus being able to feel a direct connection to the ground.

Material

The material your yoga mat is made of affects its texture, stickiness, and eco-friendliness. Most mats are made of PVC, otherwise known as vinyl. Newer options include recycled rubber and organic or natural cotton. The upside of PVS is that it’s long-lasting, and it can endure for over a decade.

Texture

The texture of your mat dictates how much slipping and sliding you do. There are yoga mat textures to suit everyone, from completely smooth to downright rough. If you’re sensitive, a bumpy texture might aggravate your savasana. If you want a mat that prevents slipping and would like to avoid PVC, look for rubber, jute, or cotton mat that has a raised, tactile pattern. If smoothness is important to you, PVS is the way to go.

How much protein your body requires greatly depends on your age, physical fitness level, and health state. But as a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to eat 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight to prevent deficiency. Here are the times when your body can benefit most from a protein shake, according to nutritionists.

After a Workout

This one is probably not news to you, but it’s worth reminding that consuming protein after a workout is extremely beneficial for your recovery. Not only does it help with muscle repair, but it also keeps you fuller for longer.

As a Snack When You’re Pressed for Time

Since protein shakes are so easy to mix up and have on the go, they can be a great in-between meal snack substitute on busy days. Nutritionists recommend incorporating lots of fruits and veggies in your shake to stay fuller for longer.

As You Get Older

According to the latest 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, there are specific life stages when nutrients like protein, calcium, and vitamin D found in dairy-based protein foods become extremely important to promote bone health and avoid health conditions such as Osteoporosis and muscle wasting.

The terms endurance and stamina are often used in the context of physical exercise. While people have a generally correct understanding of what they mean, these two terms are often mistakenly used interchangeably. While stamina and endurance are both parameters of exercise, there is a key difference between these two concepts.

Stamina refers to the ability to sustain an activity for a long period of time without getting tired. In other words, staying energetic for a long time. In running, for example, stamina is the total time the body is able to sprint. Stamina is especially important in sports that require large bursts of energy; like soccer, football and baseball.

Endurance, on the other hand, is defined as the maximum time the body, or a specific muscle can exert force and sustain one particular exercise. Examples of activities that require endurance are push-ups and sit-ups. Endurance is made up of two components: cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance. The first is the ability of your heart and lungs to fuel your body with oxygen. The latter is the ability of your muscles to work continuously without getting tired.

So while endurance and stamina may be similar, they don’t mean quite the same thing. Regular aerobic exercise can help you improve both of these fitness qualities.

The sleeper stretch is an exercise that improves the range of motion and internal rotation in the shoulders. If you sit at a computer for most of the day, look down at your phone often, or generally stand with your shoulders rounded forward, there is a good chance you have some tightness in your upper body.

Doing the sleeper stretch daily can help with that. When this move is performed while lying on your side, it stretches out the back of your shoulder. The goal is to increase your range of motion in the shoulder, which will result in better flexibility in your shoulder, which will make your daily tasks much easier. Here’s how the sleeper stretch is done:

  1. Lie on your affected side with your shoulder stacked underneath you. You can use a pillow to support your head.
  2. Position your right arm out in front of you at a 90-degree angle at the shoulder. Bend your right elbow 90 degrees so your forearm is perpendicular to the floor.
  3. Use your left arm to gently and slowly push your right palm toward the floor, until you feel resistance. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds.
  4. Repeat on the other side.

We don’t tend to give our ankles much thought, but well-functioning ankles are extremely important for daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, squatting, and lunging motions. Here are a few effective stretches to try when you feel stiffness in your ankles or tightness somewhere in the foot or calf region.

Ankle Circles

  1. Stand tall on your feet hip distance apart.
  2. Shift your weight slightly to the left and lift your right heel from the floor, leaving the toes to touch the ground.
  3. Move your ankle in a clockwise rotation, as if you’re trying to “draw” as large a circle as you can with it.
  4. Perform 20 circles clockwise, then reverse the movement, and perform 20 circles anti-clockwise.
  5. Switch feet and repeat on the other side. Complete three sets per side.

Flexion and Extension

  1. Sit on a mat with your legs extended in front of you. Keep your ankles at a natural, 90-degree angle and your toes pointing upward.
  2. Moving both feet at the same time, extend your ankles, pointing as far away as you can with your toes.
  3. Stay in the full extension for a moment, then reverse the movement, flexing your foot to see how close to your shins you can bring your toes.
  4. Alternate between flexion and extension for 20 repetitions. Complete two sets.

Inversion and Eversion

  1. Start with your feet flat on the ground, your toes pointing straight ahead.
  2. With your right foot, roll your ankle outward as far as possible (inversion). Hold for a moment at the end of the stretch.
  3. Reverse the movement and roll your ankle inward as far as possible (eversion). Hold for a moment.
  4. Continue inverting and everting 20 times before switching feet. Complete two sets per side.

A simple walk goes a long way. Whether you’re walking as part of a scheduled workout routine or you’re just enjoying a stroll around the neighborhood, you’re reaping plenty of benefits. Here are a few hacks to help you ease into a walking routine and elevate your walks to make them even more efficient.

Multitask

The good thing about walking is that it allows you to multitask. If you find it hard to squeeze exercise into your work schedule, for example, you can combine the two. If the weather is nice, make your work calls while walking. Or use that time to catch up with long-distance family and friends.

Wear Ankle and Wrist Weights

If you want to raise the level of exertion, try wearing ankle and wrist weights while walking. Opt for a pair that’s slim and convenient. Alternatively, you can wear a weighted belt. This will help you burn more calories and tighten your core muscles.

Listen to a Podcast

If you’ve exhausted all your workout playlists, try listening to a podcast. When you find something that is truly interesting to you, you won’t even notice time passing.

A sedentary lifestyle and long hours sitting at desks and in front of screens have become much more widespread in recent years, causing many people to suffer from tight hips and lower back pain. Yoga is one of the best ways to treat this issue, and the pigeon pose, in particular, has proven powers against those aches, since it increases hip flexibility and rotation. It specifically works as a hip opener and forward bend, stretching your thighs, groin, back, piriformis, and psoas. Here’s how to safely practice the pigeon pose.

  1. On a yoga mat, begin in Downward-Facing Dog Pose.
  2. Next, raise your right leg off the ground and bring your right knee to the back of your right wrist. Then, rotate your right shin so that it’s parallel with the front of your mat.
  3. As you bring your right leg to the mat, keep your left leg straight as it reaches the ground.
  4. Bring your left knee to the floor, behind you.
  5. Gently lean forward until you feel a stretch in your piriformis
  6. Hold for a few breaths, then switch sides.

The colder months are upon us, and as we’re anticipating temperatures to drop and rainy and snowy conditions to become the norm, soon your summertime sneakers aren’t going to cut it when you go for a run. Here’s what to look out for.

Traction and Protection

Winter running often means running on slick or wet roads, so when looking for winter running shoes, you’re going to want a waterproof variety that will keep your feet warm and provide some traction. The ideal pair should have a lug sole with deep grooves to prevent slipping on icy roads and a waterproof lining that will keep your toes safe and dry when stepping in cold puddles. Water leaking into your shoes increases the risk of frostbite.

The Right Fit

It’s also important to choose a pair that’s similar to your summer running shoes in the sense that it’s the same fit for your pronation (the way your foot rolls inward when it hits the ground). It also needs to be as close of a heel to the toe drop as your summer shoes. This means the number of additional millimeters of cushioning in the heel versus the toes. If you overlook these seemingly small details and switch to a completely different shoe you can end up with an injury, according to running coaches. The easiest way to find the right winter shoes for you is to look for a trail running shoe made by the same brands as your warm-weather trainers.

The positive effect that lifting weights has on cardiovascular health and muscle building is well known. But fascinating new research published in The FACEB Journal revealed that strength training has another proven benefit, which is specifically important for those looking to lose weight—it is very efficient at burning fat.

The study’s preliminary findings suggest that when we lift weights, our muscles release a specific type of genetic material into the bloodstream. That genetic material then seems to be transferred to our fat cells to speed up the fat-burning process. In short, the mere act of lifting weights may spur a biological process that starts to metabolize fat cells.

What prompted the scientist to conduct their research was the quick fat-burning processes observed in weightlifters. While it makes scientific sense that the larger your muscles, the more fat you burn, it wasn’t enough to explain those immediate fat-burning benefits. In a statement to The New York Times, John J.NcCarthy, Ph.D., one of the study’s authors, said that the discovery is yet another reminder that “muscle mass is vitally important for metabolic health.”

Many companies have been putting effort into creating and selling more eco-friendly products, and that includes athletic-wear giants like Nike. The Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature was launched earlier this week, and they’re hailed as Nike’s “most sustainable performance shoe yet,” according to the brand.

Made from 50% total recycled content The new sneakers are an upgrade to the Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%, which are most popular among long-distance runners (including record-breaking marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge). Nike incorporated the use of innovative materials, and principles of circular release, according to a press release.

The idea was to design a shoe that will not fall short of the innovative NEXT% shoe in terms of the function of performance, in a way that would reduce material waste and impact. Product testing by athletes involved logging 400 miles or more of rigorous activity to make sure the shoes actually performed well.

The Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature is not the only environment-focused Nike project. The brand is currently working on drastically reducing and ultimately eliminating its carbon emissions and waste. These new production processes will be implemented on the majority of the Nike running line. The new sneakers are expected to go on sale later in September and their price is yet to be announced.
