Cheat meals allow us to get a short and well-deserved break from workouts and healthy diets. However, they don’t actually have to completely break all the rules. There are a lot of cheat meal foods that are actually good for you if enjoyed moderately.

Pancakes

How can pancakes be good for you aside from making you feel happy? Well, if you are careful about the ingredients, you can make some healthy pancakes. Make sure to use oat flour or almond flour, fruits or nuts as additional ingredients, and maple syrup if you are going with a sweetener.

Cheese

Cheese is full of calories, but when consumed in moderation, it can have numerous benefits. It is a great source of calcium, protein, and B and K vitamins, and also contributes to a healthy gut.

Chocolate

Chocolate is considered a big no-no for people who want to have a healthy diet. However, if you opt for dark chocolate that has 70% cacao or more, you can actually benefit from its antioxidant properties. On top of that, you’ll get a boost of energy.

Popcorn

Popcorn is an excellent source of fiber and antioxidants. But in order to keep it on the healthier side, avoid the pre-packaged varieties and make your own from kernels.

Milkshakes

Similar to pancakes, a milkshake can also be a great cheat meal that is good for you if you make it right. This includes opting for low-fat, low-sugar ice cream and adding maple syrup and honey as a sweetener. In exchange, you’ll benefit from calcium, protein, and several other important nutrients.

All fruits are delicious in their own right, but they’re not all created equal. Certain fruits contain high amounts fructose, and they won’t do your gut health any favors. If you’re looking for refreshing and tasty fruits that can do wonders for your digestion, these five are a good place to start.

Bananas

Bananas are one of the best low-fructose fruits for your digestion because they contain inulin, a dietary fiber that stimulates the growth of good bacteria in the gut.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit, are also a great pick when you’re trying to improve your gut health because they’re a good source of soluble fiber, which helps lower cholesterol and aids digestion.

Barries

Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries can also do wonders for your gut health because they contain prebiotics that promote the growth of good bacteria.

Kiwi

Kiwi is also one of the fruits that can help you reduce bloating and digestive discomfort. They’re a treasure trove of actinidin, a natural enzyme which breaks down proteins and facilitates gastric digestion.

Apples

Even though certain types of apples can be high in fructose, they contain a soluble fiber known as pectin, which can reduce the risk of bloating and facilitate smoother bowel movements.

The third season of The White Lotus introduced us to many vibrant new characters, and protein shakes played an important role in the Season 3 finale. Patrick Schwarzenegger’s character, Saxon, couldn’t go a day without drinking one, but what were his infamous protein shakes made of?

Schwarzenegger recently sat down with Eating Well to discuss his approach to fitness and nutrition and took a moment to address The White Lotus protein shakes. He revealed they were made of two bananas, a scoop of peanut butter, milk, creatine, and protein powder.

Schwarzenegger admitted he didn’t enjoy their flavor since The White Lotus creator Mike White kept asking him to keep putting protein powder into a blender because he found the process fun.

“It actually worked out really great for when Sam [Nivola] had to drink them because his character was supposed to hate them, and they actually did taste like pure chalky sand. So he would be drinking it and then my character would be like ‘chug it, chug it, finish it.’ And it would just be so gross for him,” he explained.

Even though he wasn’t a huge fan of the protein shakes from the series, he enjoys them in general, and peanut butter and bananas are his favorite flavor combo. When it comes to working out, he’s a huge fan of running and weightlifting, but enjoys mixing things up and trying other forms of exercise.

You don’t have to be an expert to make delicious smoothies, but it takes some extra skill to take their flavor to the next level. If your smoothies are too watery and you’re looking for ways to make them extra rich and creamy, these five ingredients are just the thing you’re looking for.

Frozen Fruits

Most people can’t imagine making smoothies without frozen fruits, and that’s not a coincidence. They’ll thicken your smoothies in an instant without watering them down.

Avocados

If you’re trying to up the healthy fat content of your smoothies, avocados are the way to go. In addition to boosting the nutritional content of your smoothies, they’ll make it easier to achieve a silky, smooth consistency.

Liquid Base

The liquid base can also significantly impact the flavor of your smoothies. Dairy milk and coconut milk are some of the best options when you’re trying to make your smoothies extra rich and creamy.

Nut Butters

Going vegan can help you embrace healthier eating habits and turn your life upside down. Anthea of Rainbow Nourishments seems to agree, and she made quite a splash on social media with her tried and tested recipes that make plant-based lifestyle accessible to everyone who wants to try it.

With over 700,000 followers and counting, Rainbow Nourishments is one of the most popular Instagram pages dedicated to vegan baking. Its founder Anthea fell in love with cooking at a young age because her parents owned a restaurant and cooked everything from Chinese to Italian and French food.

Despite majoring in politics, policy, and art history and working for the Federal Government for several years, Anthea couldn’t give up her passion for food. Rainbow Nourishments was initially a cake business, but she shifted gears as the years went by and decided to focus on developing vegan recipes accessible to everyone.

Rainbow Nourishments is not just about the kitchen but nourishing people on a deeper level. I believe that food should encourage people to connect with loved ones and be a way to practice kindness to yourself, others, and the environment,” she explains on her official website.

Anthea’s blog is filled with plant-based recipes because a vegan diet is “more sustainable for the world and minimizes harm to animals.” She also enjoys developing recipes for people with other food restrictions, such as gluten-free, refined sugar-free, and nut-free recipes.

It’s extremely important to hydrate properly before your workouts, and the drink you choose can make all the difference. Many people turn to carbonated drinks before hitting the gym, but this isn’t a great idea for more reasons than one. Here’s why drinking soda before your workouts can do you more harm than good.

Bloating

Bloating is one of the most common side effects of drinking soda before heading to the gym. Fizzy drinks can cause bloating, abdominal pain, and gas, so it’s best to avoid them so you can go through your workouts without digestive discomfort.

Sugar Overload

One of the reasons why soda is best avoided, both before and after the gym, is its high sugar content. The sugar rush you experience from drinking soda can help you power through your workout, but it won’t do you any good in the long run. Even diet sodas aren’t that great since they might lead to migraines and dizziness due to the artificial sweeteners they contain.

Dehydration

Dehydration is another major side effect of drinking carbonated drinks before hitting the gym. Since soda contains significant amounts of sodium, which draws water out of the body’s cells, it can leave you dehydrated, so it’s best avoided before your training sessions.

Any type of intense workout or straining physical activity comes with sore muscles. This feeling is completely normal and a way your body is telling you that your muscles are healing. Getting proper rest is the most efficient solution for sore muscle recovery. However, if you want to speed up the process, you might consider turning to these foods and drinks.

Salmon and Other Fatty Fish

Salmon and other fatty fish like bluefin tuna are high in protein, which does wonders in sore muscle recovery. It helps repair the damage in strained muscles while also reducing inflammation. On top of that, fatty fish is rich in omega-3 fats, which help prevent delayed-onset muscle soreness.

Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese gets the nod for the same reason as fatty fish. It is loaded with protein and a great source of calcium.

Spinach

Spinach is incredibly rich in nutrients including vitamins (A, C, and K) and minerals (iron, magnesium, and potassium) while also packing flavonoids and anti-oxidants. All of these nutrients work together to ease muscle soreness while also aiding their growth.

Chocolate Milk

Chocolate milk isn’t just for children. It will hydrate your body while also providing it with electrolytes, protein, carbs, and fat. It is recommended to drink a glass of chocolate milk within an hour of finishing your workout for optimal results.

Tart Cherry Juice

Tart cherry juice is becoming increasingly popular among fitness enthusiasts and for a good reason. Multiple studies showed that its anti-inflammatory properties, provided by a high content of polyphenols, help muscle recovery and ease the feeling of soreness.

Selenium is an important nutrient that plays a crucial role in many bodily processes, from protecting your body from infection to helping you boost your immune system. The average recommended daily intake stands at 55 mcg, and eating these five selenium-rich foods can help you reach that number with ease.

Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are one of the best foods you should turn to when trying to increase your selenium intake. They’re best eaten in moderation because a single Brazil nut contains 96 mcg of selenium, almost twice your daily requirement.

Roasted Ham

Roasted ham is another great source of selenium, with 42 mcg per 3-oz portion, while pork and beef are right behind.

Fish

Selenium can be found in many different types of fish and seafood. Tuna and sardines are among the best sources of selenium, along with shrimp, closely followed by halibut, cod, and salmon.

Turkey & Chicken

You can also up your selenium intake by eating lean protein, such as chicken and turkey. Three ounces of white chicken meat contains around 22 mcg of selenium while eating 3 ounces of boneless turkey can get you 26 mcg of selenium.

Eggs

Eating eggs is a great way to up your selenium intake without going overboard since one large hard-boiled egg provides around 15 mcg of this nutrient.
