We hear it all the time—sugar is bad, sugar is toxic, sugar will wreak havoc on your health. While it’s true that sugar isn’t exactly a superfood, you don’t necessarily need to eliminate it entirely. As with most things, moderation is key, and there can absolutely be room for small amounts of sugar in an otherwise balanced diet. That said, ideally, it’s best to eat as little as possible, but reducing sugar consumption tends to be easier said than done. If you’re looking to cut back on sugar but aren’t sure where to start, read on for some tips to help make it easier.

Read Labels Carefully

Learning to properly interpret nutrition labels and recognize all of the different names for added sugar is essential when trying to reduce sugar consumption. As you shop for groceries, thoroughly read the ingredient lists on pre-packaged foods, keeping an eye out for terms such as sucrose, glucose, and high-fructose corn syrup, which are all just fancy names for sugar.

Choose Whole Foods

Whole foods almost always contain less sugar than their processed counterparts, so prioritize fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains as the foundation of your diet. Cooking from scratch not only makes it easier to limit added sugar by giving you more control over the ingredients, but you’re also less likely to default to sugary treats if you need to make them yourself.

Cut Back Slowly

Quitting sugar cold turkey can be difficult and may end up leading to junk food binges, so consider taking a gradual approach by adding less sugar to your tea or coffee and slowly cutting back on treats and desserts. Experiment with healthier alternatives like fruit, yogurt, or dark chocolate to satisfy cravings as your taste buds adjust.

Honey, honey, how you thrill me! The sweet nectar might get a bad rap from the anti-sugar brigade, but we think its health benefits far outweigh that. Aside from being a natural sweetener, honey can be used to treat illnesses and give your skin a glow. Here are 3 ways to get the most out of the sweet stuff.

Antibacterial

Bees knew what they were doing when creating this sticky substance. During production, they impart a protein that kills bacteria and boosts your immune system. So, next time you cut yourself, you might want to take advantage of honey’s antibacterial properties.

Eases Coughing

Coughs are annoying. They are either the symptom that starts the illness or the one that decides to linger around long after. According to studies, honey is actually more effective than cough syrup when it comes to kids, so give them a spoonful at night to ease the irritation.

Skin Treatment

The benefits that honey has on your skin are almost endless! It can be used to moisturize, cleanse pores, diminish the signs of aging, lighten pigmentation, and prevent breakouts, not to mention give your skin a gorgeous glow!

While setting a holistic workout program is crucial to your physical well-being, so too is selecting the right food to accompany it. While there is a wide variety of food that can supply you with the nutrients you need, here are some superfoods that will give you a significant energy boost before your workout.

Spinach

This green vegetable is great at not only boosting your strength but defending your body against harm. Filled with zinc and fiber, spinach helps to detoxify your body and balance your metabolism. Due to containing a high level of antioxidants, spinach will help to decrease muscle soreness and improve recovery after your workout. There are also plenty of recipes that include spinach, from pasta to curry.

Salmon

Protein is an essential part of any bodybuilder or gymgoer’s diet. There is perhaps no healthier source of protein than fish such as salmon. This fish possesses anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids that will reduce post-workout muscle soreness while the protein itself will help to build muscle during your workout.

Chickpeas

Containing both protein and carbohydrates, chickpeas prove beneficial both during and after your workout. They contain a high amount of iron that will help to improve your oxygen flow as well as endurance and overall performance.

We’ve all been there—the expenses are coming in, the laundry’s piling up, and it feels like life overall is coming at us faster than we can manage. While we know logically that junk food won’t do much to help, we can’t resist reaching for a bag of potato chips or a carton of ice cream to cope. Well, it turns out there’s a reason that our bodies crave such foods during times of stress, and there are better ways to deal with it than binging on Snickers.

Stress & Hormones

Part of the body’s natural response, when we experience a stressful event, is to release a hormone known as cortisol, which can disrupt our body’s hunger and fullness signals and increase our appetite for high-calorie foods. The next time you feel stressed, try practicing relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing to regulate cortisol levels instead of going straight for the candy aisle.

Emotional Eating

It’s normal to want to seek comfort in times of stress, and one of the easiest ways to do so is through food. Foods that are high in sugar and fat stimulate the brain’s reward center, causing the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine that temporarily make us feel better. Unfortunately, the effect is short-lived, and the inevitable blood sugar crash can quickly lead cortisol levels to spike again. The best way to break this cycle is to replace unhealthy snacks with nutritious alternatives like nuts fruits and veggies.

Mindfulness & Stress Management

In addition to relaxation techniques, mindfulness is one of the best ways to reduce cortisol and tame stress-induced cravings. Mindful eating in particular involves paying close attention to the taste, texture, and aroma of your food as you eat, making it easier to tune into your body’s cues and resist impulsive eating. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a solid social support network can also make a big difference in reducing stress overall.

Breakfast Super Shake

Grab some full-fat milk, yogurt, blueberries, goji berries, and a banana, and place them in a blender. Then, mix the ingredients until smooth. If you’re in the mood to experiment with different flavors, consider adding some cinnamon or honey to the mix.

Avocado Smoothie

In addition to the core ingredient of avocado, this delightful green smoothie requires bananas, frozen mango, and coconut milk. Depending on the flavor you wish to achieve, consider adding vanilla protein powder or spinach as well.

Vanilla Protein Smoothie

If you enjoy creamy vanilla milkshakes, then this healthy alternative is right up your alley. Place vanilla, milk, banana, greek yogurt, coconut oil, and pineapple in your blender and mix well.
