When you’re diagnosed with COVID-19, rest and recovery should be your main priorities. But if your symptoms have gone, how long should you wait until you start working out again and how should you get back into it?

In general, it’s safe to work out after recovering from COVID, but you do need to take some precautions before you just jump back into it. Here’s what you should know about exercising after recovering.

How Soon Can You Work Out After Having COVID?

This really depends on your symptoms, so you should consult with a doctor before just heading straight into working out. Most doctors recommend waiting at least a week after your symptoms have improved, but if you experience more significant symptoms, you may have to wait closer to two to three weeks.

Even if you’re asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, you should wait at least ten days to work out after you’ve tested positive. When you do decide to start exercising, be patient with your body, and don’t push yourself too hard.

How to Start Working Out Again

How you work out once you’re cleared to by your doctor will depend on your current symptoms and your fitness level before getting diagnosed. It’s best to start at a lower level of exertion than you normally would and to work out for a shorter period of time. Over time, you can increase the intensity and duration.

Workouts can be so much more fun when you have company, but is it safe to work out with a friend during the pandemic? Here’s what you need to know about exercising with a friend right now.

Staying Fit by Yourself

You shouldn’t feel guilty if this year wasn’t your time to shine in any way, including fitness. Being the strongest or fittest may not be your priority right now and that’s okay. This can be especially true for people who are used to exercising in groups and now have to do the same activities at home, with nobody by their side.

Exercise Company

Depending on where you live, it may be more or less risky to spend time with people outside of your household, whether that means exercising together in the park or somewhere else. As long as you follow social distancing rules, working out with a friend shouldn’t be a risk.

Public Places

What about gyms, swimming pools, and other sports facilities? They are closed in some places and open in others, but it’s still best to avoid them for now. It’s not easy to make sure you’re not crossing paths with an infected person in such settings and you can see why that’s risky behavior.

Over the past month or so, many gym and studios are starting to open back up. And while they’re opening up again, it’s important to be cautious about going back. We must note that gyms are a high risk area due to them being an enclosed shared space. At the same time, exercise is hugely beneficial for overall health and for many, going back to the gym is just what they need to get through the stressors of the pandemic. If you’re one of those people thinking about going back to the gym, here’s how to make it a safer experience.

Make Sure Your Gym is Following CDC Protocol

Your gym shouldn’t have more than your state’s allowed indoor percentage of people present and everyone should be wearing a mask at all times and staying six feet apart. The staff should also be wiping down surfaces constantly and doing temperature checks at the door.

Bring Your Own PPE and Sanitizer

When going to the gym, you should bring a mask and sanitizer to wipe down seats, workout equipment, and weights. If you can, bring your own equipment like yoga mats, jump ropes, and weights.

Go During Off-Hours

If you have the opportunity, go to the gym during off-hours like lunchtime or days when it’s not as crowded.

Attend Outdoor Fitness Events

Some gyms have moved their classes outside or have open-air facilities to allow better airflow. Being in an outdoor safe is much safer than in a closed space.

As lockdown constrictions mount and gyms across the world are closing, it is important that you find a good local running route. This will help you stay motivated, keep your cardio up, and improve mental health. Here are four things to keep in mind when planning your running route.

Length

It is vital that you plan a route that correlates with your fitness level. A route that is too long can cause injury and leave you stranded. A good way of determining the length is to test various routes by walking and gauge the right distance.

Circular

It is a good idea to make a circular route so that you finish where you started. This makes your run more efficient, effective, and fun.

From Your Home

Preferably your run route will begin and end at your house. As coronavirus constrictions mount, it might be harder to use your car. Also, it makes it easier to warm up and warm down if you don’t have to drive.

Varied Terrain

It can be a good idea to choose a route that has different kinds of terrain such as steps, steep hills, and woodland. These can train more muscles and improve overall fitness.

As coronavirus confines more and more of us to our houses, it is important that we consider the best ways to work out in our homes. Here are four easy tips for working out at home.

Establish a Routine

The number one technique for working out at home is to build up a robust routine. This should cover exercises for the whole body as well as cardio work.

Keep a Timetable

When you work out at home, it can be hard to manage your time properly. The best way to stick to your routine is to design a timetable. This will tell you when to workout and what kind of exercises to do. A timetable also allows you to tailor your workouts to your own specifications.

Get Out of the House

It is good to try and get out of the house once or twice per day. This can be for a walk in the local area, a run, or even just a trip to the shops. This will help keep you fresh and motivated.

Skipping

A great way to exercise at home is to skip with a skipping rope. It doesn’t require much space, it works out the whole body, and is great cardio.

Fall’s a great time to sign up for community races and to support the causes that you’re passionate about. But with COVID-19 still in full-effect, is it safe to run these races? While a lot of events are going virtual, which means that you can run or walk them on your own, there are still in-person races still scheduled across the country. So, is it safe to participate and what precautions can you take to stay safe?

To put it as directly as possible, no group activities are safe now. An outdoor race is safer than a lot of activities, if health and safety measures are followed. The safety of races depends on how they’re organized and what safety measures are put into place. Some questions to ask are is the race staff wearing masks and gloves, is everything being sanatized every half hour, can medical aid provide care in a safe way, are refreshment and aid stations contact-fee, is the check-in process contact-free, and are there hand sanatizing stations?

Are you planning to race a turkey trot this year? . . Whether you are going to be in person racing or virtual racing like the @woodburywobble, you need to train. . . Having a clear training plan will help you focus on increasing speed, feeling strong through the longer runs, build up your strength, and stabilize your core. . . The Finish Line Strong Training Plan gives you 12 weeks of run training for three levels of beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners. I took on the beginner plan a few months postpartum and ended up running a 23:40 5k, which is one of my adult bests! . . That turkey trot is coming up in just 11 weeks, so make sure you start your run training plan now. Snag your training plan using the link in my profile and make this your strongest, fastest, and most fun turkey trot yet. . . This photo was from my fourth marathon, which I ran in 4:19:32 on just three weeks of training. Only two minutes off my PR! One of the most fun races ever. I found out the next week I was pregnant with Hazel. 😅 . . #wreckingroutine #runchat #turkeytrot #woodburywobble #woodburymn #runningmom #runlikeamother #healthyhappymom #postpartumrunning #5ktrainingplan #runtothefinish #runnerforlife #momofthreekids #thanksgivingrace #virtualrace #runforfun #healthblogger #runningcoach #momblog #fitnessblogger #runforfun #holidayrunning #thanksgiving2020

As you can see, there are tons of questions you should get answers to before you go ahead and sign up for races. Make sure you pay attention to cancelation clauses as most races aren’t refundable and they’re expensive.

If you do decide to run, wear a mask and stay six feet apart from people. The best way to stay safe is to not go and instead to try a virtual option.

While we’re currently unable to do many things that we took for granted last summer, the COVID-19 pandemic still hasn’t canceled all activities. Being active and spending time outside is good for your health and immune system and here are a few low-risk activities you can practice without worrying.

Walking and Running

As long as you avoid crowds, walking and running outside are safe and desirable. Make sure to do it alone or with someone with whom you live so you don’t get into risky contacts. Wearing a mask while walking and running can be difficult, which is why choosing areas with no people is crucial.

Cycling

The similar is true for cycling. Take your bike and go explore remote areas, but if you’re using a bike for transport and go among people, make sure you wear a mask.

Swimming

While swimming pools are considered a medium risk, it’s best to stay out of them for now. But you can enjoy a day at the beach and swimming in saltwater. Again, this is only safe if the beach isn’t crowded. If you have plenty of space for yourself and don’t get in contact with other people on the beach, you shouldn’t worry.

Part of leading a healthy lifestyle is being kind with yourself and it’s more important now than ever during the coronavirus. Self compassion is all about treating yourself the way you’d treat someone else. Treating yourself better can make it easier to reach your health and fitness goals. Here’s how to practice self-compassion.

Spend Time in Nature

Although you may not be able to spend as much time outside as you’d hope to, going outside has so many health benefits. If you can’t go outside, listen to nature sounds like rainstorms or ocean waves, or look at pictures of nature.

Pause Your Weight-Loss Goal

Instead of focusing on reaching a number, focus on exercises you enjoy or other ways to be active. Be realistic and realize that everyone’s life has drastically changed during this pandemic and gaining a couple of pounds isn’t the end of the world.

Limit News and Social Media Consumption

Take some time to yourself and unplug from your social media. All of the bad news and uncertainty is extremely stressful and overwhelming.

Indulge in Foods

With all the extra time you’re spending at home, use the time to prepare tastier and more indulgent foods that you usually don’t partake in. Eating mindfully will allow you to enjoy the food more than you usually would.

Start Mobility Exercises

Use this time to work on your range of motion. During this time when you’re sitting more, it’s best to get on the floor and do mobility exercise.

Within the past few weeks, more and more gyms have reopened, but the way people workout changed significantly during the lockdown. Many of the ways people exercise are expected to continue long past the coronavirus. What have your at-home workouts looked like? Have you been doing any of these workout trends?

Virtual Training

Virtual training allows you to have the convenience of workout out whenever it fits into your schedule and you don’t even have to leave your home! Minimal equipment is required and all you need are dumbbells, a kettlebell, and some bands.

Yoga For Mental Health

Yoga can help you deal with the stress and anxiety going on around you while allowing you become more flexible and stronger.

Group Training

With human contact being extremely limited during the coronavirus, it makes sense that people are craving social connections through group training classes. These classes are offered both online and in person at parks, camps, and studios.

Instagram Live Fitness

In addition to Zoom, Instagram Live has become the go-to place for group fitness and personal training workouts. It allows you to feel a part of a community without actually being physically connected.

HIIT

High intensity training (HIIT) allows you to get an intense workout in a short period of time and it’s easy to adapt at-home. You don’t need any equipment and it works well for various athletic levels. It’s expected that people who have started doing HIIT during lockdown, will continue once restrictions are lifted.
