Home workouts are a great way to stay fit, and even some of Hollywood’s biggest stars swear by them. Dakota Johnson falls under that category, and she’s a huge fan Megan Roup’s Sculpt Society workouts, which helped her pull through the pandemic and the demanding Madame Web schedule.

Johnson was introduced to the online fitness streaming platform Sculpt Society during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and she’s been doing them ever since. Her workout even helped her get ready for her role in Madame Web and helped her stay strong and toned for the film’s high-intensity action scenes.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, I did a deep dive to find a workout that suited my taste and body – and then I became devoted to Megan… Megan manages to get that good burn feeling in places on the body I didn’t know were possible to tone. It’s a good pain – a hard-work pain,” she told Vogue.

For some reason, we as humans love acting as though we’re not influenced by our surroundings. This is a great habit to have within the right context because it can be a cop-out to blame our mistakes on others. However, when it comes to working out, we are very much affected by what’s around us—and in a way, it’s our right to be a little selfish in order to achieve our goals (as long as we’re being respectful). This is super relevant when it comes to finding the right workout space and here’s how to do it.

Space

You need your space when doing your various exercises. If you’re only doing a few reps of curls, then you can get away with a limited area, but for most body-based workouts, you’ll need a lot of room. Make sure the room you’re in is nice and big—there’s no time for you to waste energy deciding if your legs will hit that random chair in the corner.

Proper Foundation

In addition to space, you need to make sure that the floor is a good surface for you to work out on. We don’t love carpets because while they’re soft, they provide a little too much “give”. What you ideally want is a hard surface where you can then lay out a soft mat that you bought at the store.

There are pros and cons to going to the gym. Gyms can provide access to workouts we may not otherwise have. The community we may find through going to the gym may also bring motivation that can help us reach our goals as well as hold ourselves accountable. On the other hand, gym memberships can be quite expensive, and many of us have jobs that prevent us from being able to go as much as we’d like. An unused membership is a waste of money and continuously telling ourselves that “we’ll go tomorrow” can lead to feelings of guilt that make us unmotivated. It’s a personal preference, but if this sounds like you, consider putting together a home gym. Here’s what we suggest:

Dedicate a Space

This can be anywhere you have room: a garage, a sunporch, or even a corner of the hallway. For some reason, we as humans love acting as though we’re not influenced by our surroundings. This is a great habit to have within the right context because it can be a cop-out to blame our mistakes on others. However, when it comes to working out, we are very much affected by what’s around us—and in a way, it’s our right to be a little selfish in order to achieve our goals (as long as we’re being respectful). This is super relevant when it comes to finding the right workout space and here’s how to do it.

Space

You need your space when doing your various exercises. If you’re only doing a few reps of curls, then you can get away with a limited area, but for most body-based workouts, you’ll need a lot of room. Make sure the room you’re in is nice and big—there’s no time for you to waste energy deciding if your legs will hit that random chair in the corner.

Proper Foundation

In addition to space, you need to make sure that the floor is a good surface for you to work out on. We don’t love carpets because while they’re soft, they provide a little too much “give”. What you ideally want is a hard surface where you can then lay out a soft mat that you bought at the store.

On the one hand, a gym provides everything you need to when it comes to working out. On the other hand, you don’t technically need everything that’s there. There’s a lot you can accomplish working out at home—but here’s what you really need to think about.

Where You’ll Get The Most Work Done

This is really the most important thing to consider when deciding if you should join a gym or not. Sure, the gym has everything you need, but will you be too lazy to drive there? Are you going to be distracted by the “scene”? On the flip side, you can work out at home, but will you feel less motivated in the environment where you also happen to relax, watch Netflix, and eat junk food?

Know Yourself

It really depends on the type of person you are, and where you get your energy from. You might be the kind of person that thrives working out at home and wouldn’t enjoy exercising in public. On the other hand, you might actually get energy from being in a place where everyone else is working out, as opposed to being at home. The only way to know for sure is to try both options out, and see what creates the best results!

There are pros and cons to going to the gym. Gyms can provide access to workouts we may not otherwise have. The community we may find through going to the gym may also bring motivation that can help us reach our goals as well as hold ourselves accountable. On the other hand, gym memberships can be quite expensive, and many of us have jobs that prevent us from being able to go as much as we’d like. An unused membership is a waste of money and continuously telling ourselves that “we’ll go tomorrow” can lead to feelings of guilt that make us unmotivated. It’s a personal preference, but if this sounds like you, consider putting together a home gym. Here’s what we suggest:

Dedicate a Space

This can be anywhere you have room: a garage, a sunporch, or even a corner of the hallway. The important part is that this will be a place you can access easily without having to set up every time you want to work out. Having everything ready to go makes jumping into a workout seem much less daunting.

Bring Variety

The main reason most of us go to the gym is that we’ll have access to different kinds of equipment. You don’t have to invest in a treadmill or anything expensive. Set up a yoga mat, get some weights or kettle balls, install some hooks, and hang a few jump ropes and you’ve covered all of your fitness bases.
