A rowing machine is one of the most versatile gym machines, and you should definitely include it in your routine. If you’re still not sure how to use it, here’s what you should know about the four main phases of working out on a rowing machine.

The Grip

The grip is your starting position of catching the handle before you start to row. It’s important to do it with the correct form, keeping your back straight, core tight, and make sure your shoulders are positioned in front of your hips.

The Drive

This move is all about driving the legs up and extending your knees to push your heels into the foot pedals. Make sure to use your hips when you’re doing this move and allow your hands to cross over your knees. This is the most complex phase of using a rowing machine, so try to stay relaxed throughout.

The Finish

The finish refers to the final positioning of the body following each stroke. Allow your torso to lean back slightly, and your legs to extend, and hold this position for a brief moment.

The Recovery

The recovery phase is pretty self-explanatory, and it’s all about allowing yourself a brief moment of relaxation before your next stroke.

The rowing machine is sometimes overlooked at the gym as it can be slightly repetitive and boring, but in actuality, it is one of the best full-body cardio workouts you can do. It can improve posture and tone the lower body, and the major muscles in your legs, arms, back and core must all be activated when using the machine.

Here are four reasons you should include the rowing machine in your workout.

High Intensity, Low Impact

Unlike the treadmill, you’re able to get your sweat on without injuring your knees or ankles. It can increase your cardio fitness without putting stress on your bones and joints.

Strengthen Your Core and Glutes

When you row, your core crunches and relaxes as you glide along the machine, meaning you’re doing a mini sit-up every time you row back and forth. Not to mention, pushing with your legs works on your glutes.

Track Your Improvements

If you want to get faster or build your endurance on the machine, you can start to track your improvements with the help of the information you will see on the screen. You can track your speed, Kcals, and time, and start to increase every workout.

Compliments Your Strength Workout

It can be a great ending for your strenth workout, instead of spending 30 minutes on the cross trainer, all your need is 10 minutes of intense rowing and your heart rate will increase and your arms and legs will be burning.

Rowing machines can be a great way of strengthening your muscles, training your breathing, and reinforcing your mind. Most gyms come decked out with rowing machines for general use, but you can also invest in one at home. Here are four benefits of working out with a rowing machine.

Whole Body Workout

The great thing about rowing machines is that they don’t focus on one part of the body to the exclusion of the rest. They workout the whole body evenly.

Cardio

Rowing machines are a great form of cardio. They improve the body’s capacity for sustained activity, improve the heart, and breathing systems.

Builds Muscle

But the impressive thing about rowing is that it doesn’t just work on cardio, but is a tremendous way to build muscle all over your body at the same time. This makes you physically fit and strong at the same time and to the same degree.

Trains Breathing

The combination of cardio and muscle workout makes rowing an excellent activity for training the breath. How you breathe is crucial to the quality of your performance. By learning to breathe steadily and strongly despite hard activity, your overall fitness abilities are improved.

Avoid doing these rowing mistakes and you’ll see how many benefits you’ll gain from working out on this machine.

Don’t Aim For Speed

Most people think that the faster they workout on the rowing machine, the more effective it will be. This is one of the most common rowing mistakes you have to avoid. Make sure that you’re aiming for power and great posture while doing it.

Using Only Arms

Rowing is actually an exercise that targets several different parts of the body. Avoid using only the arms because it’s a mistake that can lead to an injury.

Hunched Back

Chances are you’ve seen so many people in the gym on this machine with a hunched back. Avoid one of the worst rowing mistakes by looking at yourself in the mirror and checking your posture while doing the exercise.

You Don’t Breathe

Holding your breath while rowing is never a good idea. Just like any other exercise, breathing in and out can only do you good. Exhale when you push back, and inhale during recovery. It will give you more strength to do the reps.

Pulling Too Hard

Instead of pulling too hard on the machine, you should also learn to push yourself with your feet. Balancing the use of different parts of the body is important and the way to use this machine.

Dallas is literally the HARDEST person to buy a gift for. I haven’t gotten him anything big in a while for a few reasons… 1. He doesn’t NEED anything 2. If he wants something, he just goes out and buys it. 3. In the past I always felt weird getting him gifts with his money as he used to be the only “bread winner” in the fam. In my mind it went a little something like this… “Hey Dall, happy birthday, look what I bought you – with. your. own. money…, hope ya like it!” 🤣 So! I have been saving money earned from my online health & wellness coaching biz to have enough stashed away to SURPRISE Dallas with a CONCEPT 2 ROWER for his Christmas/Birthday Present this year!!! Over the past year I have been keeping my eye out for a USED rowing machine- But by the time I would message the seller they had already been sold! So, this morning when my buddy Haley, text me at 7 am to tell me someone LOCALLY was selling USED rowing machines I WAS ON TOP OF IT!! Rowing is one of my absolute favorite cardio exercises next to sweating it out with my favorite trainer Shaun T. For those that know me well, know that I HATE running. But throw a rower in front of me and I’m a happy girl. {{continued in comments below}} • • • • • #concept2rower #concept2 #concept2rowing #rowingmachine #rowingworkout #rowingmachineworkout #iloverowing #anythingbutrunning #christmaspresents #latechristmasgifts #earlybirthdaygift #earlybirdgetstheworm #happybirthday #myhubbyrocks #hustle #goforyourdreams #goforyourgoals #chaseyourdreams #youcandoit #ineedtoloseweight
