Gym memberships are expensive, home equipment ain’t cheap, but at least running is one affordable way to exercise, right? While generally speaking, running is indeed free, it’s essential to wear proper shoes to prevent injuries, and supportive, well-made sneakers can come in at up to $150 a pop. Over time, the cost of running shoes can seriously add up, and while it’s not recommended to settle for cheap alternatives, there are certain ways you can prolong the life of your shoes to save money while keeping your feet protected.

Rotate Between Pairs

While this method may cost you more money upfront, alternating between two or more pairs of running shoes can make a significant difference in how long each pair lasts. The force placed on the insoles as your feet hit the pavement can cause them to get squashed down, and rotating between pairs gives the foam time to decompress. It’s also important to wear breathable, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry, as the moisture from sweat can also cause shoe materials to break down.

Hand Wash

Washing machines use agitation and hot water to remove dirt and odors from clothing, but when it comes to shoes, they can weaken the glue bonds and damage the material. Smelly as your shoes may be, avoid the temptation to toss them in the washing machine and opt to clean them by hand instead. Gently scrub off any dirt with a soft brush or damp rag and remove the insoles to air them out separately.

Consider the Terrain

Abrasive surfaces like concrete, asphalt, and uneven trails provide little shock absorption and can put stress on the outsoles of your shoes, potentially causing them to wear out faster. To keep your shoes in tip top shape, limit your runs on these surfaces and stick with synthetic rubber tracks, treadmills, or even grass.

Choosing the right running shoes is essential for a comfortable and injury-free running experience. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to find the perfect pair. But fear not! Here are some tips to help you choose the right running shoes.

Know Your Foot Type

Understanding your foot type is crucial when selecting running shoes. There are three main foot types: neutral arches, low arches (overpronation), and high arches (underpronation/supination). You can do a simple wet foot test or consult a professional to determine your foot type.

Consider Your Running Style

Assess your running style and gait to determine if you have any specific needs. Some runners may require extra cushioning, stability features, or motion control depending on their gait and foot strike pattern.

Get Properly Measured

Visit a specialty running shoe store where experts can measure your feet and provide accurate sizing recommendations. Remember that your shoe size can vary across different brands, so don’t rely solely on your usual shoe size.

Try Before You Buy

Always try on several pairs of shoes to find the best fit. Lace them up and walk around the store to assess comfort, support, and any potential areas of discomfort. Make sure there’s enough room in the toe box to wiggle your toes comfortably.

Consider Your Running Surface

Think about the type of terrain you’ll be running on. Different shoes are designed for road running, trail running, or a combination of both. Choose a shoe that suits your intended running surface.

However you prefer to work out, it’s important to have proper equipment in order to keep yourself from getting injured, and in many cases, this means wearing the right sneakers. Except for a few activities like swimming and yoga, sneakers are a very versatile piece of workout gear that can be worn for everything from CrossFit to Zumba, so it makes sense to choose a pair that you know you’ll be comfortable in and will hold up well over time.

You don’t have to spend a fortune—cost isn’t necessarily indicative of quality when it comes to sneakers. If you’re a serious gym-goer, however, you may find it worth investing in a more expensive pair. Here are some of our favorite sneakers at every price point.

Athletic Propulsion Labs Techloom Breeze – $220

These would definitely fall under the category of “splurge,” but they’re as popular as they are among athletes and celebrities for good reason. They’re incredibly lightweight and comfortable, yet provide the perfect amount of support for walking, running, biking, and more. All Techloom shoes are unisex, so be sure to double-check sizes before you order.

On Cloud X – $140

Still a bit of a splurge, but slightly less pricey, On’s Cloud X shoe is great for any type of workout but especially comfortable and supportive for running. They provide a nice amount of traction and are also quite durable, so you shouldn’t need to replace them as often as other running shoes.

Skechers GOrun Razor 3 – $50

For under $100, you can’t go wrong with any of the sneakers in the Skechers Go Run line, but we especially love the Razor 3. They’re lightweight and comfortable enough to wear all day long and are available in several fun colors for both men’s and women’s styles.

If you’re trying to get into a jogging routine but aren’t sure if you should buy new running sneakers, you’re not alone. After all, good running shoes aren’t cheap, and you want to make sure you’re actually serious about running before you actually splurge on new shoes. Not only that, but you technically have regular sneakers that you can run with—they’re just not specifically “running sneakers”. So are running shoes really necessary?

Yes, Because They Make a Huge Difference

Even though you could technically use the sneakers you currently have, they are world’s apart from sneakers that are geared specifically towards running. Companies make them with the intent that their users will be able to withstand long runs with optimal comfort, and you’ll absolutely notice the difference.

It’ll Encourage You To Run More

If you buy new running sneakers, you’ll feel more committed to your task of running more. You’ll see it as almost your responsibility to follow through on your promise, precisely because you invested money into this plan.

Listen, if you’re truly strapped for cash, then maybe wait a few weeks to save up, or at least make sure you’ll serious. But if it won’t break your bank, then go for it!

One of the best things about running is that, unlike many other sports and activities, it requires almost no equipment to do. All you need is a pair of running shoes and you can do it. However, your shoes are crucial because the wrong shoes, or shoes that fit the wrong way, can make or break your run. So how do you know if your running shoes fit you properly? Here are some things to consider.

First, your shoe should fit snugly in the heel and midfoot. However, your toes should have a little bit of wiggle room.

When you stand up, you can check to see if the shoe fits by pressing your thumb around your toes. Ideally, there will be about a half to a full thumb’s width of space.

Another good test is to hold the back of your shoe and try to raise your heel. It shouldn’t move too much.

However, the best tip of all is to go to a good running store with a knowledgeable staff and ask them to help fit you for a running shoe, or even just to check if the one you already have fits you.

While it’s important that all the shoes you wear to work out in fit properly, when it comes to running, it’s even more important. They need to be just the right size in order to prevent injuries and blisters. And finding ones that fit perfectly can be hard, but with these tips, it’s easier.

Check the Fit

If the shoe fits right, you should have about a thumbnail’s width between your longest toes and the end of the shoe when you stand up. There shouldn’t be any pinching or rubbing on your toes, ankles, or heels. You shouldn’t need to break running shoes in—they should feel great out of the box.

It’s About What Feels Good to You

There are tons of types of shoes and what you like may be different than what other people want in a shoe. Some people prefer shoes with lots of cushions, and others like firm shoes. There are also “zero drop” shoes, which means the heel isn’t higher than the footbed, and ones that have a higher heel-to-toe differential.

Keep the Activity in Mind

There are different types of running shoes that are intended for different types of activities like trail shoes and road racing shoes. Also, running brands make other shoes that aren’t designed for running, so keep this in mind.

Get Measured and Fit by an Expert

Even if you’re feeling confident with your shoe size, your feet change over time and many brands fit differently. Also, in running shoes, you wear a different size than regular shoes because your feet swell when you walk and run and your shoe needs to accommodate this. An expert can help you figure out what shoes are best suited for your needs and what fits best.

After we work out, we usually know to immediately put our clothes in the laundry and take a shower. But the one thing we don’t always remember to clean is our shoes. Sneakers that get sweaty and go too long without being cleaned can start to smell and even grow fungus or bacteria. So be sure to clean your workout shoes regularly. Here’s how.

Washing Machine

As long your sneakers aren’t made of suede or leather, you can wash them in the washing machine by placing them in a pillowcase or mesh bag and putting them in the washing machine along with some linens that need washing. Wash on a cold, gentle cycle. Try to get off as much debris as you can before washing them so as to minimize what the washer needs to take off.

Powder

To help with stench, sprinkle some baby powder or baking soda inside your shoes and leave overnight. The powder will absorb the smell. When it’s time to put them on again, pour out the powder. If you like, use a wet wipe to wipe the inside clean and let them dry before putting them on.

Air Them Out

On the day-to-day, the most important thing you can do is air our your shoes as soon as you take them off. Remove your sneakers immediately after working out, remove insoles, and place either somewhere cool and dry or directly in the sunlight to let them air out and help discourage bacteria from growing.

Comfortable running shoes are the most important piece of equipment for every runner. Running in old shoes can impact your fitness performance, or even lead to injuries. Check out a few sure signs that your running shoes need to be replaced.

Worn-Out Treads

If your shoes are worn-out, especially on the soles, this is a sure sign that they need to be replaced. Running in worn-out shoes will put a lot of stress on your legs and joints, so it’s best to buy a new pair.

Poor Shock Absorption

Running is a high-impact sport that puts a lot of stress on hips, knees, and feet. That’s why having quality running shoes that will absorb these shocks while running is extremely important.

Mileage

Keeping track of your mileage is a great way to improve athletic performance, but it can also help you decide when it’s time to buy new shoes. Most experts agree that shoes should be replaced every 400 to 600 kilometres, but this also depends on the running surface and how often you run.

Pain Or Soreness

If all of a sudden you experience pain during or after a run, or notice any soreness, that might be a sign that your running shoes are worn-out.

Running shoes are the most important piece of equipment for every runner. We usually invest a lot of money in quality running shoes, which is why we’ll do you one better. Here are a few tips that will help you take good care of them and extend their life.

Only Wear Them for Running

We know that they’re very comfortable but try not to use your running shoes outside of your running workouts.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CNTUygBnBH1/

Avoid the Dryer

Putting your running shoes in the dryer could damage both the dryer and the shoes, so try to avoid this mistake. High heat can damage and permanently warp your shoes, so it’s always best to air-dry them.

Rotate Between Shoes

Investing in two or more pairs of running shoes can be expensive, but it’s also the easiest way to make them last longer. This way, the shoes will have time to recover and air dry after every run, which is particularly important for runners who work out very often and run long races.

Keep Them Clean

Last but not least, don’t forget to clean your shoes on a regular basis because this can also extend their life. Even if you’re tired after a long run, make sure to clean your shoes and remove dirt or mud after every single run.

When it comes to working out, you want to feel your best and most comfortable, which means that the last thing you need is to be tugging at your clothes or having your toes cramp up in your shoes. So before you even sign up for that gym membership, it’s a good idea to make sure the shoes you’ll be working out in fit you. Here’s what to look out for.

Pretend It’s a Workout Day

When you try on your workout shoes, try to go about at the time of day that you plan on working out during. Since your feet swell during the day, if you buy your shoes in the morning but work out in the evening, they may not be the right fit. You’ll also want to wear the type of socks you plan to work out in.

Do the Wiggle Test

When you try on your shoes, wiggle your toes. There should be enough room for them to move, but you should still feel support from the front top of your shoe while you do so.

Walk Around the Store

While you may not be able to do a full workout in the shoes you’re trying on to tell if they feel good, at the very least try walking and jogging around with them on. Do some heel raises and jumping jacks. If your shoes slip or pinch during these activities, they’re not the right size. And looking silly in the store is worth finding that out before you pay for them.
