Treadmill workouts come with a long list of benefits, but they can start feeling pretty monotonous and repetitive after a while. If you’re struggling to stay committed to working out on a treadmill, here are five tips and tricks that can help you improve motivation and make your workouts more enjoyable.

Keep it Fun

Treadmill workouts are extremely multitasking-friendly, and you can make them extra fun by doing some other activities along the way, such as listening to a podcast or watching your favorite TV show.

Don’t Do it Alone

Working out with a friend is one of the best ways to stay motivated to hit the gym. This strategy can do wonders for your treadmill sessions because you’ll have someone to keep you occupied.

Try New Things

Working out on a treadmill is only repetitive if you make it. Try to switch things up by changing the pace, adding intervals, and experimenting with other treadmill settings.

Mix it Up

Treadmill workouts have their benefits, but they don’t have to be the main part of your workout routine. Mix things up by working out on other machines and consider adding some strength training to the mix.

Track Your Progress

Having clear goals and tracking your progress is one of the best ways to stay motivated, and you should definitely apply this strategy to your treadmill workouts.

12-3-30 workouts are one of the most popular fitness trends that TikTok introduced us to, and their popularity isn’t fading away. This treadmill routine isn’t losing steam, and if you’re thinking about giving it a try, we’re bringing a list of pros and cons worth taking into consideration.

What Are 12-3-30 Workouts?

The 12-3-30 routine went viral thanks to Lauren Giraldo, and it will take your treadmill workouts to the next level. It involves walking on a treadmill for 30 minutes, with the incline set to 12% and speed set to 3mph.

Pros of 12-3-30 Workouts

If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly low-impact routine, the 12-3-30 workouts are just the thing you’re looking for. They’re a great cardio workout that can help you burn some major calories, while also improving your stamina and balance, and helping you build lower body strength.

Cons of 12-3-30 Workouts

Despite their many benefits, you should approach the 12-3-30 workouts with caution. They can put a lot of pressure on your lower back, especially if you don’t have a solid posture, and you should consider making your workout shorter if you’re not used to repetitive walking or running.

The repetitive nature of the 12-3-30 workouts is also one of their biggest cons. The repetitive movements can put a lot of pressure on your knees, ankles, and calves, in addition to making your workouts pretty monotonous.

If you’re thinking of slowly building a home gym, the treadmill is probably one of the first machines you’ll consider buying, but is it really a good investment? We’re bringing you a list of the pros and cons of having a home treadmill that will help you make the right decision.

Pro: Enjoyment Level

Some people hate treadmill workouts from the bottom of their hearts, while others swear by this gym machine. Before buying your own, try working out on a treadmill in the long run because this will help you determine which group you belong to.

Con: Taking Up Space

One of the biggest issues with treadmills is that they take up a lot of space. Buying one is only an option if you have enough space in your home since they’re one of the most space-consuming cardio machines on the market.

Pro: Good Warmup

Despite coming with a wide variety of adjustable speeds and inclines, treadmills don’t offer much versatility beyond that, but they have their perks. They’re great for multitasking, and you can always use yours as a part of your warmup routine.

Con: Better Alternatives

The main argument against buying a home treadmill is a wide variety of better alternatives that can help you reach the same fitness goals. Ellipticals and stationary bikes are a case in point, and using them is usually less mundane.

If you’re looking for a new fitness routine and are a fan of classes, then it might be time to start trying out some of the best fitness classes that New York City has to offer. Lucky for you, we’ve tested many of them and got you covered with some honest reviews of some of NYC’s popular gym classes.

Soul Cycle

Soul Cycle is a great choice if you’re looking to do spin in a fun, supportive, and non-competitive environment. They often have fun-themed rides, which is great for fans of pop sensations like Taylor Swift. The trainers are really high energy and motivational. It is not the most budget-friendly option, however; so if you’re looking for a less expensive option, Cyclebar is also great.

Barry’s

Barry’s is excellent if you’re looking to torch calories and be challenged. It’s a tough workout combining speed intervals on the treadmill followed by weight sessions. This is also on the costlier side, so if you’re looking for a more affordable option, Orange Theory is an option.

Rumble Boxing

Rumble is excellent for core and cardio movements in a high-energy workout environment. The class combines boxing sessions with weight training for the ultimate HIIT and sweat session.

Mile High Run Club

This boutique gym has a few studios across NYC and offers speed and interval treadmill training and is taught by expert running coaches. This is an excellent option for those training for a race, or just looking to add some cardio to their routines.

You might look a little funny doing it, but once you hear of the serious benefits from walking backwards on a treadmill, you won’t even care! If you struggle from knee pain or want a fun exercise to improve your balance and core strength, walking backwards on the treadmill is the exercise for you. Although walking backwards originated as an exercise recommended by physical therapists for patients recovering from knee surgery, it is quickly becoming a new fitness trend. Here’s why you need to start walking backwards on the treadmill.

Reduce Knee Pain

Walking backwards on the treadmill improves the joints’ mobility and strengthens the muscles surrounding your knee. This can significantly reduce (or even get rid of!) knee pain that is caused by surgery or incorrect shock absorption. Walking backwards for even just a few minutes has the potential to reduce or completely get rid of your knee pain!

Core Stability

Challenging the body to walk backwards forces new muscles to work in order to keep your balance in the new pattern of movement. This improves balance and core strength, as it will be difficult when you first start walking backwards. Once you get used to the movement, you can even add an incline or pick up speed to really fire up those muscles!

It’s easy to hop on the treadmill and fiddle with the settings. And while you can get a good workout by doing that, it’s good to know exactly how to get the very most you can out of your treadmill run. Here are some things to keep in mind that may not have occurred to you to check.

Use an Incline

Walking on a slight incline is a good way to ensure you get the right resistance out of your walk and run. Think about it: with the mat moving under you and no wind resistance or unevenness like outside, no incline is easier than a normal run. Don’t overdo it though, as too high an incline for extended periods of time can cause undue strain.

Use Music or TV to Stay Focused

Sometimes the best way to run is to let yourself get lost in a show or playlist and let your body take over. The natural breaks for commercials or a new song will also give you a sense of when it’s time to ramp up or cool down. Remember, if you do watch TV, make sure you don’t need to turn your head to do so because prolonged head turning will strain your neck!

Don’t Forget Warmup and Cool-down

With a treadmill, it’s easier to get a head start and to stop immediately when you’re done because you just press the buttons, instead of needing to make yourself go faster or walk home when you’re done. But warmup and cool-down are important for your heart rate. If your machine has a heart rate sensor you can use that to ensure you’re raising and lowering safely.

Learning how to use a treadmill is not very hard and it’s also essential for anyone who wants to exercise on this cardio machine. A treadmill can be dangerous if used improperly, so here are a few safety guidelines on how to use it safely.

Leave Enough Space

One of the first things that you need to do before your workout is to make sure that there is enough space around the treadmill. Remove any objects that could cause injuries because even the most experienced runners can accidentally fall while using the treadmill.

Don’t Step Off a Moving Treadmill

Even though this is obvious, it’s important to remember that you should always pause or shut off the treadmill before stepping off because a moving treadmill can be dangerous for people around it.

Look Forward

Looking at your feet or to the side is a common mistake among beginners that can easily cause you to lose balance and fall. To avoid this scenario it’s important to always look forward while running on a treadmill.

Don’t Run Barefoot

Just because you’re exercising from the comfort of your home doesn’t mean you can run on a treadmill barefoot. Always wear running shoes when using a treadmill in order to improve workouts and prevent injuries.

New treadmills can be quite pricey, so if you’re looking to buy one for your home gym, you’re probably tempted to get a used treadmill. Here are a few reasons why that’s not the greatest idea, and why it’s better to buy a new one.

You’ll Spend Less In The Long Run

Affordable pricing is the main reason why people buy used exercise equipment but is it affordable in the long run? When you buy a used treadmill, chances are that you won’t have a warranty, so in case something breaks down you’ll have to pay for expensive repairs.

The Quality

The truth is that when buying a used treadmill, you can’t really know how many people have used it before and if they really took good care of it. If you do decide to buy a used treadmill, make sure that it’s in good condition and stick to quality brands.

Buy The Latest Technology

Another thing to keep in mind is that buying used treadmills means that you’ll get older technology and you’ll miss out on all the cool features that new machines have to offer.

Order Online

If you decide to buy a new treadmill, you can do it from the comfort of your home by simply ordering online. On the other hand, buying used equipment should be done in person because you have to check its condition.

When it gets cold outside, running on a treadmill is a great way to get your cardio in. However, chances are you’ve been running on the treadmill incorrectly. So, how should you run on the treadmill to get the most effective workout?

NASM-certified trainer at Fhitting Room and Running Mechanics Performance Coach L2, Ben Lauder-Dykes, posted his tips for how to run on the treadmill and one of them is something many of us have been doing wrong for years.

It turns out that you shouldn’t run too close to the front of the treadmill and that you should be able to see your feet when you look down—they shouldn’t be hidden by the console.

“Imagine you were running outside and then someone stepped in front of you,” he told POPSUGAR. “If you just tried to stop your feet, you would probably still fall into that person because you have some forward momentum, so it wouldn’t work. To safely decelerate and stop, you would have to shorten your stride to take smaller steps and lower your hips to be able to slow down.”

In addition to not having enough room to take full strides, you’re increasing the impact on your body, which can lead to injuries.

Other suggestions Lauder-Dykes mentions are warming up, letting yourself fall back a bit on the tread and then speeding up to move forwards, and adding an incline.

Are you ready to implement these tips for a better treadmill workout? We certainly are!

Home workouts are more and more popular and the popularity of the Peloton fitness program has been increasing as well. Two things have kept many people from ordering their own Peloton machines: their price and size. The company is now sharing some good news—the new Tread machine is coming and it will be more affordable and easier to fit in smaller spaces.

The Peloton Tread is a smaller version of the brand’s famous Tread+ machine. While Tread+ costs $4,295, its smaller cousin will cost $2,495. It’s announced to come out in March 2021.

The price is objectively still high, but it allows you to get the Peloton’s famous HD touchscreen and sound system for half the cost of the Tread+. You won’t get the $39/month subscription for unlimited classes, though, unless you buy it separately.

If you’re unsure if Peloton machines are the right choice for you, you can visit one of the brand’s stores and try them out before making a final decision.

As for their bikes, there are already two versions available—Bike and Bike+, with many different classes available for all the users.
