One of the biggest mysteries of the fitness realm is the big M: motivation. How do you find it? How do you avoid losing it? Where does it come from? For those of us who have a hard time motivating ourselves to work out, these questions can truly haunt us.

Well, what if we told you that there’s one big secret to exercise motivation that can keep you sticking to your workout routine day after day without falling off? Would you want to hear it?

Well, here goes nothing…

The secret to finding the motivation to exercise is that motivation doesn’t work. That’s right, we said it. Motivation doesn’t work. Why?

Well, motivation is fleeting. Some days you have it, and some days you don’t. If you only ever worked out when you felt motivated to, you wouldn’t work out consistently. Even professional athletes lose motivation.

So how do people manage to get themselves to the gym every day, or stick to another type of highly consistent training schedule?

Here’s the secret: habit.

The thing that’s going to keep you exercising regularly is when exercise becomes a habitual part of your day-to-day life. If your brain knows automatically that what you do every morning when you wake up is go to the gym, you’ll do it, whether or not you particularly feel like it that morning.

So if you’re worried about motivating yourself to exercise, forget motivation. Focus on building the habit and you’ll be set.
