5 Activities to Help You Stay in Shape While Taking a Break From Running

From time to time, it’s good to take a break from running as your body needs time to repair and recover when you’ve been pushing it really hard. Whether you are forced to take a break due to injuries or you choose to take a break after training really hard for a race and completing it, taking a break can maximize your runs when you decide to run again. But, if you can’t stand the thought of being inactive, these five activities will help increase your heart rate.

Water Running

Water running is most similar to running and it allows you to mimic what you do on dry land without putting stress on your muscles and joints.

Cycling

Cycling is great for your lower body and it has many of the same benefits that running does. You can cycle with a trainer at the gym or outside.

Swimming

Swimming laps is a low-impact activity that won’t put extra stress on your joints. Once you get in a rhythm, you’ll find it’s as relaxing as running.

Ellipitcal

Ellipticals are non-weight bearing and they target your cardiovascular system.

Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country is the only activity that comes close to the amount of calories burned in running and it’s an intense upper and lower body workout.
