Champion Gymnast Doesn’t Let Down Syndrome Hold Her Back

Chelsea Werner is an amazing gymnast and inspiration for everyone that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to, with hard work and perseverance. Chelsea, who is 25-year-old, was born with Down Syndrome, but that hasn’t stopped her from winning the Special Olympics US four times and winning the title of Defending World Champion twice.

Chelsea began gymnastics at the age of four to help her develop stronger muscles, which is a health problem for most people with Down Syndrome.

“I’ve been doing gymnastics [for] as long as I can remember,” Werner told A Plus. “I feel like it’s always been a part of my life. I think gymnastics has trained me to be disciplined and to work hard. In gymnastics, each new skill takes a very long time — sometimes years! I think that it has given me confidence.”

Not only is she an award-winning gymnast, Chelsea models for We Speak. We Speak is an international agency that promotes self-love and acceptance of your body the way it is.

“I don’t think people with Down syndrome are represented enough,” Chelsea told A Plus in an email. “The more we are represented, the more people will see how capable we are.”
