Swimming is one of everyone’s favorite summertime pastimes. It’s relaxing, refreshing, and fun, but you may end up dealing with major sunburns after your outdoor swimming adventure unless you take crucial steps to avoid them.

Waterproof Sunscreen

Swimming outdoors without sunscreen on is not an option. You should apply your sunscreen 20-30 minutes before getting in the water, and reapply it every 40-80 minutes if you’re going for multiple swims. Waterproof and water-resistant sunscreen is your best option.

Perfect Timing

Open water swimming will leave you exposed to the sun, but you can decrease the risk of getting sunburns by perfectly timing your swimming sessions. As with any other outdoor activity, you should try training early in the morning or late in the evening.

Right Clothes

You should always make sure to protect your scalp with a swim cap, but that’s not the only item of clothing you should be concerned about. If you dealt with severe sunburns in the past, consider getting a swimming suit that fully covers your body.
