For 2021, many people decided to make their New Year’s resolution to get into shape. And one of the best ways to do that is by running. But we’re already over two months into the year and if you’re not seeing results, it can be extremely discouraging. Don’t give up! You may not be getting into shape from running due to these reasons. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

You’re Eating Back the Calories

Running burns a lot of calories and it can leave you feeling hungry and overeating. If you’re eating more than you burn, you won’t be getting into shape. Just be thoughtful about what you’re eating. Before your run, have a light snack like a banana or a piece of whole-grain toast and after your run, have something more filling like yogurt with fruit or a protein smoothie. For your meals, make sure they include carbs, protein, and fat.

You’re Running at the Same Pace or Duration

Over time it’s important to challenge yourself by picking up the pace or increasing the duration of your run. If you’ve reached a plateau, it’s time to mix up your runs.

You’re Only Running

In addition to running, include strength training to build muscle and boost your metabolism. Include two to three strength workouts a week into your routine.

You’re Not Focusing on Recovery

Exercising and eating healthily are just part of what it takes to get into shape. Recovery is also important and your body needs time to heal and repair post workout. Recovery includes sleep, staying hydrated, and fueling your body.
