Pilates is one of the best ways to strengthen your core muscles and elongate your figure. The fitness circle also referred to as a resistance ring or magic circle is a common prop used to enhance Pilates mat workouts. Here are a few ways to utilize the fitness circle to elevate your at-home workout session.

Chest Opener with Tricep Extension

Start on your knees with your hands behind your back holding the ring. Align your hand with the soft paper of the ring. Then, open up your chest, squeeze your shoulder blades together and squeeze the ring between your palms. Repeat 10 times.

Bridge

Start on your back and place your legs through the ring, where it rests a couple of inches above your knees. With your feet flat on the mat, hip-width apart, carefully roll your body up to a bridge. Squeeze the glutes at the top and flare the knees. Repeat 10 times.

Abdominal Crunch with Leg Extensions

Start by lying on your back, and place the ring between your knees. Keep your hands behind your head. Legs start at tabletop position, and as you crunch up, extend one leg up to 45 degrees and double squeeze the ring. Bend your legs back to tabletop position, lower the head and neck, and repeat. Repeat 10 times.

Exercising at home has many perks. It’s easy, convenient, enjoyable, and you can do it whenever you want. However, working out alone also means that you have to be careful in order to avoid injuries and achieve your goals. Here are some common mistakes to avoid when exercising at home.

Doing Only Cardio

Cardio is fun, great for torching calories, and probably the most convenient type of workout to do at home. However, you shouldn’t skip strength training because it’s equally beneficial and important.

Skipping the Warm-Up

This is a common beginner mistake you should avoid because warming up muscles will prepare your body for workouts and reduce the chance of potential injuries.

No Plan

Working out alone means that you need to create a workout program that will help you reach your goals, because otherwise you’ll just be performing random exercises every day. Luckily, there are plenty of free workout programs online that you can follow, that will help you work all muscle groups.

Boring Workouts

This is a common mistake and the reason why many people give up on exercising. The best thing about at-home workouts is that you don’t have to worry about other people, so feel free to switch up your workouts whenever you feel bored.

Being in a wheelchair doesn’t have to mean you can’t work out. In fact, there are plenty of workouts you can do from your wheelchair that will make you strong, fit, and healthy. Here are some of the best for you to try.

Overhead Extensions

Raise a stick, weight, or medicine ball over your head and hold it there with both hands for around 20 seconds. Then bend your elbows and repeat for three sets.

Front Raises

Take a weight in each hand or a medicine ball in both and extend your arms straight out in front of you. Keeping your arms straight, lift them up and down 20 times. This will strengthen the muscles and ligaments around your shoulders.

Side Twists

Extend your arms out in front of you and turn your torso to one side and then the other side. Try to keep your shoulders parallel to each other. This will stretch your back and sides. If you like, you can hold a medicine ball in your hands to make this harder.

Keep Moving

One of the best ways to keep fit is to keep moving around in your wheelchair between exercises. Try to find enough space to move around in, maybe about 30 square feet.

Working out at home can be amazing, but if you don’t have much space it can also be a struggle. Not having enough time for a full-length workout is also a problem for many people, and in these situations, HIIT workouts are the perfect choice.

HIIT (high-intensity interval training) combines intense periods of exercise with short breaks and allows you to burn many calories quickly. It’s especially loved among people who’re trying to lose weight, but it’s also great for anyone who wants to fit in a quick workout in their busy schedule.

The 20-minute HIIT workout we’re sharing below was designed by ACE-certified personal trainer and fitness nutrition specialist Lyuda Bouzinova. “If you keep the intensity high throughout the workout, you’ll also get your body into a state of EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), also known as the afterburn effect. That means you’ve revved up your metabolism and you’ll be burning calories long after the workout is over,” she told PopSugar.

Bouzinova suggests you do the workout before eating, as you will feel lighter. Since the workout is short, your muscles will do all the work on their own energy. Warm-up first then do three sets of each of these exercises:

  • Burpees: 8 reps
  • Tricep dips: 15 reps
  • Snap jumps: 8 reps
  • Leg raises: 15 reps
  • Lunge jumps: 8 reps each side
  • Sumo squat: 15 reps

Celebrity trainer Melissa Alcantara has always been an advocate for working out at home. Before she became Instagram-famous and started working as a trainer for celebrities like Kim Kardashian, she mostly worked out at home as she does now. Since most of us are currently unable to go to a gym, perhaps her tips can motivate you to stay active in the comfort of your own home.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but I started my fitness journey working out from home doing Insanity by Shaun T. It was the most challenging and rewarding experience ever,” she told Popsugar. “Sixty days and a ton of sweat, laughs, tears, and pounds off my body, I knew my life had changed forever.”

She emphasized the importance of feeling free in your own home. You can wear anything you want, do any workout you prefer, and nobody will be there to judge you. There are plenty of incredible workouts you can do without leaving your home. Alcantara’s favorite tool is her own body. As for props, she relies on training bands that are affordable and easy to store.

Find a home workout that suits you and enjoy getting fitter day after day!

There are definitely some strong arguments in favor of exercising at home. It saves you the time you’d spent going to and from the gym, it saves you the money you’d spent on various memberships, there’s no crowd, and you can listen to whatever music you want.

On the other hand, there are some cons to choosing to do your workouts at home instead of at the gym. They include a lack of motivation to exercise regularly and the fact that buying your own equipment can get really expensive. Here are 5 most important rules to know if you decide to exercise at home.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1b8GYgnUCf/
  1. Make a schedule and stick to it. It will be much easier to stay on track with your workouts if you fit them in with your schedule in advance. Find a free slot that you can use for training three or four times per week and make sure to never skip a session with yourself.
  2. Create a designated space where you will exercise in that, if possible, serves no other purpose. This will help you focus and it will put you in the mood for exercising as soon as you step into that room or corner.
  3. Get a yoga mat even if you’re not doing yoga. It’s handy for many exercises that should be done on the floor.
  4. Get a few workout outfits and use them. Change from your lounge clothes into training clothes just like you would if you were going to the gym.
  5. Turn off your phone and minimize the distractions as much as possible, then focus on your workout if you want it to be maximally efficient.

As more and more gyms are closing due to coronavirus, it’s becoming more important than ever to optimize your home workout. You don’t want to lose all that you gained during the summer. Here are five top tips for exercising from home.

Skipping

Skipping is a great way to work out the whole body and improve cardio. All you need is a body and a skipping rope. It’s perfect for home fitness!

Running Route

Find a running route around your local area that will get your heart pumping and give you some fresh air. This can be comforting as you get to know the route, as well as helping your mental health.

Equipment

While it is not necessary, it’s good to have gym equipment in your house if you can afford it and have the space. The best equipment to have is running machines, rowing machines, or exercise bikes.

Yoga Mat

A yoga mat will be a great investment. In addition to yoga, it is great for bodyweight exercises, stretching, and meditating.

Workout Videos

Online workout videos, apps, or podcasts are a wonderful way of staying motivated, sticking to a routine, and knowing that you are exercising properly.
