Most people are not getting the recommended amount of sleep, whether that is due to stress, children or just staying up too late and scrolling on your phone. When you don’t get enough sleep, this can affect your mental sharpness, mood, productivity and food choices the next day. Melatonin has been the most popular natural sleep aid, but magnesium is also a really good supplement to take before bed.

How does it help?

Magnesium is a mineral that can help control blood glucose, blood pressure regulation, muscle and nerve function, and so much more. It also plays an important role in converting protein into the chemicals that helps you to slow the nervous system down and help you to feel sleepier.

Melatonin is a known supplement to help relax your muscles, so for those who suffer with restless leg syndrome, or you have tightness from your workouts, magnesium is better in helping to alleviate that.

Where can you find it?

You don’t necessarily need to take a supplement as magnesium can be found in a lot of foods in your diet. If you aren’t eating a balanced diet, you might want to have a blood test to check if you are deficient. Magnesium can be found in almonds, spinach, peanut butter, avocado, bananas and lots of dairy products.

Do you remember when we only had peanut butter as an option for a nut butter? Nowadays, we have so many other options, which can get confusing at times. Which is the best nut butter to put on a piece of fruit and which has the most protein and health benefits? Nut butters are filled with healthy fats, protein, and fiber as well as many vitamins and minerals so they support weight loss. Here are the healthiest nut butters for you to try.

Almond Butter

Almond butter is highest in healthy fats and it’s slightly higher in nutrients than peanut butter. It tastes delicious with apples and with the combination of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, it makes a great after-workout snack.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is higher in protein than almond butter. It also contains iron and folate to help to prevent anemia, potassium for your muscles, and magnesium for your bones. It can help decrease your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Pistachio Butter

This is one of the newest nut butters out on the market. It’s also high in protein and Vitamin B, which can help turn calories into energy. It’s delicious and it can be eaten alone or on some crackers.

Tahini

Tahini is more of a spread than a butter—it’s made from sesame seeds and it’s becoming a very popular and healthy choice. It’s a good source of Vitamin E and it contains lots of copper, which makes your red blood cells. It can be used on salads as a dressing and it goes really well with most foods.

Vegan foods are becoming very trendy at this moment. Most restaurants are trying to figure out ways to serve something plant based on their menu. If you’re considering going vegan and worrying about your protein intake, there are so many plant-based proteins sources you can choose from. Even Burger King has gotten in on the act by serving plant-based burgers.

How much protein you need depends on your weight and activity level, but it’s possible to reach these needs on a vegan diet. You need to make sure you incorporate a lot of whole plant foods into your meals. Plant-based proteins are incomplete proteins, meaning they don’t contain high levels of all nine of the essential amino acids that we need to get from our diets. So in order to reach your recommended daily amount you should eat lots of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Peanuts

One ounce contains 7g of protein. They are high in fat, so be aware of this when eating lots of natural peanut butter, but they are a great protein source.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B9EgXLNosrW/

Tofu

Three ounces contains 15g of protein. Tofu contains essential amino acids, carbohydrates and fat and is a fabulous meat alternative in all dishes.

Quinoa

One cup contains 8g of protein. Quinoa contains all nine essential amino acids. It’s packed with fiber, magnesium, iron, potassium, and so much more. Swap out your rice for this tasty grain and add lots of veggies.

Kidney Beans

One cup contains 14g of Protein. Make a fabulous vegan chili with kidney beans—you wont even miss the meat. Filled with protein, these beans also reduce cholesterol and lower blood sugar levels.

We love nut butter, but we’re also trying to stick to our nutrition goals. In general, nut butters are healthy because they contain unsaturated fats, specifically polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. So what’s the difference between peanut butter and almond butter?

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6fpo9lFqat/

The two contain different types of fats, peanut butter had more polyunsaturated fat and almond butter has more monounsaturated fat. While they both are good for you, monounsaturated fats support healthy cholesterol and they are high in Vitamin E, magnesium, iron, calcium, and riboflavin. Peanut butter doesn’t contain as high of the amounts of these vitamins and minerals as almond butter, but it’s still a great source of healthy fats and it happens to be much cheaper.

So, when should you use almond butter and when should you use peanut butter? Peanut butter works well in baked goods because it’s more cost-effective. Besides for that, it really depends on which butter you prefer the taste of. Almond butter works great in smoothies and both butters are amazing on toast, fruit, oatmeal, and yogurts.

Usually, peanut butter isn’t commonly known as a health food staple. Luckily, there’s an alternative peanut butter option you can try that works as well as your regular Skippy peanut butter – but without the added sugar.

Peanut powder is here to the rescue with barely any sugar. So now you can enjoy your PB&J sandwiches, guiltlessly. 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter can contain up to 190 calories. While powdered peanut butter, on the other hand, can contain just under 50 calories for the same amount. If your diet is usually calorie-restrictive, consider having a peanut powder option on hand.

Fewer Calories

Since peanut powder usually strips off some of the natural oils found in peanuts, it contains fewer calories. Usually, typical peanut butter brands can contain vegetable fats which can cause you to bloat, that’s why peanut powder comes is a better option for keeping your waistline at bay.

Sprinkle it on Dishes

Since peanut powder isn’t typically sweet, you can also sprinkle it on your breakfast oatmeal or even on popcorn for added protein! You can also use peanut powder for making Indian curries to add a nutty flavor, while it also makes for a great peanut butter base for a healthy pad thai recipe.

Tofu
