Different foods can help to improve your workout for different reasons. Eating carbs and protein together before a workout can really boost your energy, improve your performance and recovery. Your muscles use the glucose from carbs for fuel, while protein has been shown to increase muscle protein synthesis. Fat is also important for long and low intensity workouts. And don’t forget—you want to be hydrated with lots of water before and during your workout.

Here are four foods for you to eat before your workout.

Oatmeal with Banana and Almonds

If your workout is within two hours, then this is a great meal to consume. The oatmeal is filling and slow burning, so it’s guaranteed to keep you energized throughout your entire workout.

Greek Yogurt and Fruit

If your workout is within the hour and you need something light and easy to digest, greek yogurt and fruit is a great snack. You’ll get lots of energy from the fruit and protein from the yogurt.

Protein Bar

If you are working out early morning and you need something quick to grab, a protein bar is the easiest option. Usually, protein bars have a good amount of carbs and about 20-25g of protein. It won’t keep you full for long, but it will give you energy throughout your workout.

Avocado Toast With Eggs

If you have time for a nice filling breakfast long before your workout, then mashed avocado on whole wheat toast with an egg of choice should be your go-to. You have your carbs from the bread, fat from the avocado and protein from the eggs.

How much protein your body requires greatly depends on your age, physical fitness level, and health state. But as a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to eat 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight to prevent deficiency. Here are the times when your body can benefit most from a protein shake, according to nutritionists.

After a Workout

This one is probably not news to you, but it’s worth reminding that consuming protein after a workout is extremely beneficial for your recovery. Not only does it help with muscle repair, but it also keeps you fuller for longer.

As a Snack When You’re Pressed for Time

Since protein shakes are so easy to mix up and have on the go, they can be a great in-between meal snack substitute on busy days. Nutritionists recommend incorporating lots of fruits and veggies in your shake to stay fuller for longer.

As You Get Older

According to the latest 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, there are specific life stages when nutrients like protein, calcium, and vitamin D found in dairy-based protein foods become extremely important to promote bone health and avoid health conditions such as Osteoporosis and muscle wasting.

When should you drink a protein shake, before or after a workout? This answer to this question depends on your goals and when you last had a proper meal. In the article, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of drinking a protein shake before and after exercising.

Protein Shake Before Your Workout

Pros:

Protein shakes are a great way to speed up the muscle-building process when you haven’t eaten in three or four hours prior to working out. They alleviate hunger prior to exercising while helping you reach your daily protein intake.

Cons:

You may want to steer clear of protein shakes before exercising if you have a sensitive stomach and don’t digest protein powder well. They can make you feel too full, especially if you’re doing jumping or bounding.

Protein Shake After Your Workout

Pros:

You’ll begin the muscle recovery process faster if you consume protein right after your workout. For the best results, you should consume protein 30 minutes to two hours after working out. That’s part of the reason protein shakes are such a good post-workout snack, as they don’t take a while to make and they’re easier than digesting a full meal.

Cons:

We can’t actually think of any cons for drinking protein shakes after working out. Just pay attention to the type of protein powder you drink and try and choose ones from milk like whey and casein because they are complete proteins that contain all nine essential amino acids.

Arnold Schwarzenegger had a successful career as a bodybuilder before becoming one of the biggest action stars in history, and his fitness regimen is still pretty serious. The Terminator star recently discussed his workout routine with Men’s Health and shared a recipe for his favorite protein shake.

The list of ingredients he uses include almond milk, a banana, a whole egg in the shell, and a tart cherry juice, which helps him with muscle and bone soreness. The actor admitted he’s trying to stay away from meat these days and that he eats much healthier than he used to back in the day.

The Terminator actor also said he’s not a huge fan of trendy diets, such as keto or intermittent fasting because his movies are too physically demanding for that sort of thing.

“I have to go and get on a real serious kind of regimen. I work out harder, I do more cardiovascular training, and I watch much more what I eat. So I cut out just simply all the sugar products, and I cut out all the white bread,” explained Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Protein shake may seem like the easiest way to lose weight and build muscle, but not if your recipe is all messed up. Here are three common mistakes you should avoid when making them.

Skipping Meals

Don’t ever let yourself believe protein shakes can serve as a replacement for proper meals. You actually need to eat fat in order to burn fat, and your smoothie will never provide you with all the nutrients you need. Not all protein is created equal and your health is only going to suffer in the long run if shakes are your only source of it.

Too Much Sugar

If you’re just using protein shakes as an excuse to make a milkshake, don’t bother. Overdosing on sugar will only hurt your progress and close the doors to burning fat. Opt for low-sugar impact ingredients when making your shakes, such as coconut milk, frozen raspberries, and avocado.

Wrong Protein Powder

Some of the powders on the market are filled with preservatives, artificial sweeteners, fructose, and other sugars. Avoid them at all costs by carefully reading the labels and avoiding everything that doesn’t align with your fitness goals.
