One of the most common drinks for bodybuilders and fitness buffs are protein shakes. You can barely walk into a gym without seeing someone chug down a kale smoothie, or a muscle shake. There are hundreds and hundreds of different protein drinks you can try, and it can be overwhelming for someone who’s new to it. If you’ve never had a protein shake, you may be asking yourself: are they the real deal?

To a Certain Extent

Like most things in life, protein shakes should be taken with a grain of salt (figuratively, not literally). Are there nutritious benefits to drinking protein shakes? Sure. Can they help supplement your body as you attempt to cultivate a healthier lifestyle? Absolutely? Are they miracle workers? No.

Keep Things In Perspective

While protein drinks can be incredibly healthy and helpful, they shouldn’t be your primary focus on your road to getting into shape. Many people get too focused on the shakes and end up neglecting everything else and that’s the last thing you want. As long as you keep your protein shake intake within the perspective of all the other work you need to do, you’ll be good to go in the long run!

If you’re training regularly and want to increase your muscle mass or recovery, or if you have a deficit of protein in your diet, you may be considering using protein powder to supplement your diet. Protein shakes can be a useful tool in fitness and nutrition, but there are a few different kinds that might suit different dietary needs.

Dairy Protein Powder

Dairy-based protein powders are made from compounds found in milk. These include whey protein and casein protein. Whey protein powder is the most common kind and is widely available in stores. It’s got most of the proteins you need, is very water-soluble, and it’s digested quickly and effectively. Casein protein powder, on the other hand is digested more slowly so it will give you energy for longer or is good for recovering from a workout overnight.

Egg Protein Powder

Egg white protein powder is a good option for those who don’t eat dairy. It as well as other animal-product protein powders provides less complete proteins but it can still be beneficial. It’s best to do some extra research before deciding on a powder in this category.

Plant Proteins

There are a large number of plants from which protein powders are made such as soy, brown rice, and hemp, and these have the benefit of being vegan. However, the proteins in them are less complete and they may be supplemented with each other. They also often have other nutrients in addition to protein since they come from healthy whole grains and legumes.

While it’s quite easy for the average person to get enough protein in their diet without the need to count macronutrients, you may benefit from drinking protein shakes if you’re someone who works out a lot. Getting enough protein in a plant-based diet doesn’t have to be difficult either, though it can be more tricky when it comes to protein powders. Many vegan powders have chalky consistency or are made with artificial flavors that leave a bad aftertaste, but there are few that we’ve found are really delicious. Here are our faves:

Garden of Life Raw Organic Meal

GOL’s vegan protein powder contains 20 grams of protein as well as probiotics to support gut health. It’s certified organic and available in chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Aloha Organic Protein Powder

We’re big fans of all of this brand’s drinks and snacks, but their protein powder is definitely one of our favorites. It’s naturally sweetened with coconut sugar and monk fruit and even contains fiber to help keep you full.

KOS Organic Plant Protein

KOS’s vegan protein powder is a great choice for anyone in search of a soy-free option. It’s available in super fun flavors like blueberry muffin, chocolate chip mint, and salted caramel coffee.

Protein is essential for repairing and rebuilding your muscles after a hard workout. Since this process requires a lot of protein, many people use protein shakes to supplement it. But when should you drink your protein shake? Is it better to drink it before or after your workout?

Although people often drink their protein shakes after their workouts, it actually doesn’t really make a difference. What matters for repairing and rebuilding muscle is your total daily intake of protein.

This means that it is still beneficial to take protein shakes and supplements if you are trying to build muscle. But it doesn’t have to be immediately after a workout or before. You could have your protein shake in the morning, with your lunch, or before you go to bed.

Although it doesn’t really matter whether you take your protein before or after your workout, practically it is usually better to have it afterward. This is because exercising on a full stomach of protein can slow you down, make you feel nauseous and it can disrupt healthy digestion.

It is therefore advisable to take your pretein after your workout rather than before, for practical reasons.

Many people with a busy schedule reach for energy drinks before their workout, but they can actually be damaging to your health. These energy-boosting beverages are often packed with sugar, caffeine, and other harmful additives and you should consider replacing them with these healthier alternatives.

Green Juices

Green juices and smoothies experienced a huge boom in the last few years, and they can give your body a Vitamin B boost. Using spinach, parsley, and kale as ingredients in your juices is a good idea, but drinking pretty much any natural juice is much better than consuming Red Bull.

Green Tea

If you’re thinking of replacing your energy drinks with coffee, how about opting for green tea instead? In addition to containing less caffeine than coffee, green tea also contains antioxidants and minerals that can be beneficial for your health.

Protein Shakes

Protein shakes can also give your body an amazing energy boost, as long as you use the right ingredients. In addition to protein powder, you should also add some fruits, yogurt, and plant-based milk to the mix.

When you’re training and working out hard it’s important that your body gets all the protein it needs. Protein helps build and maintain muscle, heal wounds, and provides valuable energy. But it’s not always obvious how you can optimize your protein intake for muscle growth. Here are four top tips.

High Protein Foods

The best advice for getting sufficient protein is to eat lots of high protein foods. High protein animal products include eggs, meat, fish, and dairy. For plant-based, you can have lentils, beans, tofu, pumpkin seeds, oats, almonds, chickpeas, or quinoa.

butternut S Q U A S H stir fry with jammy eggs 🥰 [#ad] One of my favourite quick weeknight dinners often includes some sort of stir fry. Inspired by delicious fall veggies, I made this roasted butternut squash stir fry and WOW did this ever turn out amazing. The addition of a runny yolk mixed with a salty/spicy sauce gave it the BEST flavour 🤩 I *try* to ensure all my meals include veggies, complex carbs & proteins. Whenever I’m stuck on what protein to use, I ALWAYS turn to eggs {no matter the time of day!}. They are an easy, affordable & super nutritious addition to any meal 😉 Ingredients: 1 small butternut squash 2 packs ramen noodles @lotusfoodscanada is my fav 2 eggs Green onion {optional} For the sauce: 1/4 cup tamari, 2 tbsp veg broth, 2 tsp rice vinegar, 2 garlic cloves minced, 1 tsp coconut sugar, 1/2 tsp chili flakes, salt & pepper Details: • peel & chop butternut squash, toss with oil, salt & pepper; roast at 400 for 30 mins + 2 min broil • boil water in a small saucepan & add eggs; boil for 5.5 mins, remove & place into an ice bath • combine sauce ingredients • cook ramen noodles per instructions, drain & toss with sauce & squash • peel & slice eggs • divide into bowls & garnish with green onion & chili flakes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #happyandfull #EggsAnytime #eggs #dinner #dinnerideas #dinnertime #healthyeating #healthyrecipes #delicious #easyrecipes #vegetarian #vegetarianrecipes #dairyfree #glutenfree #realfood #wholefoods #homemade #nomnom #eeeeeats #foodporn #yolkporn #eattherainbow #eatyourveggies #nutrition #balaceddiet #recipeshare #foodspiration

Animal or Plant-Based?

Plant-based protein is better for the environment and some would say is more ethical. However, it’s not quite as good at building and maintaining muscle as protein from animal products. If you eat a plant-based diet, the best advice is variety. Eat lots of different kinds of protein-rich foods!

Protein Shakes

Protein shakes are convenient and effective. You can tailor the amounts of protein to your workouts and they are quick and easy. But they are only effective if you have been working out regularly for some weeks.

Don’t Over Do It

Protein shakes aren’t a substitute for real food. They are only a supplement for those athletes you do regular hard workouts. The body cannot digest too much protein. It’s best to stick to high priotein nutritious food.

Nowadays everyone is trying to make sure they are sticking to a balanced diet; filled with enough protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. . . . Do you eat enough protein? . . . When it comes to aligning your diet with fitness goals, one aspect I see people consistently struggle with is consuming enough protein on a regular basis. . . . Of the three macronutrients (protein, fats & carbs), protein is typically the one that’s lagging behind. . . . Why is eating enough protein so important? . . . 💪 Protein is a crucial component in the muscle building and retaining process. You want muscle (if you are a woman, don’t worry, you won’t get bulky, I promise 😁) not just for the visual appeal, but for the many health/performance benefits as well. . . . Fun fact… the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn just existing, as it will improve your metabolism.. this is a nice plus! . . . 🥤 Protein is also the most filling and satiating macronutrient, which is a big positive when you are restricting your calorie intake (trying to lose body fat). Staying full for longer will keep you from sneaking back into the kitchen all the time. . . . 😅 The thermic effect of protein is a big plus.. Your body has to burn more calories to digest protein then any other macronutrients, which is definitely a great thing. . . . Here is few tips to help you eat more protein: . . . 1⃣ Protein at every meal. . . 2⃣ Choose eggs over cereal. . . 3⃣ Add some protein powder into your oats and smoothies. . . 4⃣ Incorporate Greek Yogurt in your diet. . . 5⃣ Keep easy protein snacks handy (protein shake, can of tuna, protein bar, boiled eggs…) . . 6⃣ Include more protein plant base in your diet (beans, broccoli, peas, spinach, soy ….) . . . Do you eat enough protein on daily basis? . . . #protein #proteinforfatloss #proteinpowder #proteinforvegetarians #proteinformuscles #proteinsnacks #proteinmeals #fatlosstips #weightlosstipsandtricks #nutritionfacts #nutritiontips #anytimefitnessredbankplains #blackbeltprotein @blackbelt_protein

There are various types of protein powder on the market made with different protein sources and different amino acid profiles. Make sure to buy quality protein, treat the powder like anything else you put in your body. Check the label for sugars or other unnecessary fillers and focus on whether it mixes well and tastes good. You don’t want to invest in a large packet of protein powder that you don’t enjoy.

Whole Milk/Whey Protein

Whole milk protein contains whey and casein which are very high-quality sources of protein. Whey provides a fast-digestion protein that muscles can benefit from quickly and casein can slow digestion and keep you feeling fuller for longer. This protein is good for those wanting to lose weight.

Vegan Protein

Soy protein powder contains all of the nine essential amino acids. Hemp protein has a high nutritional profile and is almost a complete protein, but it does tend to be high in fat. Pea protein should be mixed with brown rice protein as it is deficient in cysteine and methionine amino acids.

When should you drink a protein shake, before or after a workout? This answer to this question depends on your goals and when you last had a proper meal. In the article, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of drinking a protein shake before and after exercising.

Protein Shake Before Your Workout

Pros:

Protein shakes are a great way to speed up the muscle-building process when you haven’t eaten in three or four hours prior to working out. They alleviate hunger prior to exercising while helping you reach your daily protein intake.

Cons:

You may want to steer clear of protein shakes before exercising if you have a sensitive stomach and don’t digest protein powder well. They can make you feel too full, especially if you’re doing jumping or bounding.

Protein Shake After Your Workout

Pros:

You’ll begin the muscle recovery process faster if you consume protein right after your workout. For the best results, you should consume protein 30 minutes to two hours after working out. That’s part of the reason protein shakes are such a good post-workout snack, as they don’t take a while to make and they’re easier than digesting a full meal.

Cons:

We can’t actually think of any cons for drinking protein shakes after working out. Just pay attention to the type of protein powder you drink and try and choose ones from milk like whey and casein because they are complete proteins that contain all nine essential amino acids.

It’s best to stick to high priotein nutritious food.
