Getting to the gym in the dead of the winter can be really hard—your motivation is probably dwindling, warm-ups take longer as your bones are cold, and the idea of showering after leaves you shivering. But now it’s all about the snow and finding ways to keep warm. It’s still important to have fun. Of course, winter means skiing, but there are other activities you can do in the cold or snow to keep you strong and fit.

Ice Skating

This is no longer a kid’s activity, it is a great glute and core workout and gets your heart rate up quickly, keeping you warm on the ice. All you need is an ice rink near you, some rented ice skates and off you go. Find someone to teach you some tricks.

Snowboarding

Snowboarding is the best winter sport for your legs and abs, you can burn up to 500 calories an hour on the snow. Your obliques will be on fire every time you shift positions.

Running

Just because it is cold and snowy does not mean you have to give up on your outdoor runs. The sportswear giants have amazing clothes to keep you warm when you are running outside. Think of long-sleeved thermal wear, insulated jackets, and warm leggings. There are even running shoes with spikes to help you to run in the snowy terrain.

Ice skating is one of the most popular winter sports, but it doesn’t necessarily come with a low-price tag. Between paying for the entrance and renting ice skates, you’ll spend a lot of money if you enjoy hitting the ice rink on a regular basis, but does it make sense to buy your own ice skates?

Not For Beginners

If you’re still a beginner when it comes to ice skating, there’s no need to buy ice skates. Simply rent a pair and figure out if you enjoy this activity in the first place before making any big investment. If you decide you don’t like it, your ice skates will just gather dust.

Regular Skating

Even if you’re not a beginner and enjoy ice skating a few times each winter, you should still think twice before buying ice skates. They tend to be pretty pricy, and if you’re not ice skating on a regular basis, you’ll probably spend less money renting them than buying a new pair.

Better Than Rental

One of the main benefits of buying a new pair of ice skates is that they’re better than rental skates. They haven’t been worn by countless different people, so they won’t be worn out or have dull blades. If you’re not happy with the quality of rental skates and feel like they’re impacting your performance, buying a new pair might be a good idea.

Early Bird

If you actually want to commit to this hobby during your winter vacation, be ready to get up pretty early because lessons usually start first thing in the morning.

Ice skating is one of those activates that seems super-easy when you look at other people doing it, but stepping on ice on your own can be pretty tricky – especially if it’s your first time. Here are a few things you should keep in mind if you’re a beginner who wants to give it a try.

Start with rollerblading

Ice skating requires a lot of balance, and you can develop it by trying out similar activities – including rollerblading. It’s basically the same sport with a different surface, and it will help you prepare yourself for what to expect on ice rink.

Keep your cool

Concentration is key when it comes to skating on ice and you should always focus on what’s ahead of you. Stop wasting your time by looking at your feet and simply follow your instincts. Your body will move in the right direction once you put your mind to it.

Trouble with the skates

If ice skating is just a recreational activity, you probably won’t have to invest a lot of time and money into picking the right pair of skates. It’s still important to choose the ones that fit you and tie them up properly, since doing it wrong can lead to falls and injuries.

Cycling in the cold weather can be extremely tricky, but some people just don’t want to give up their favorite sport. Here’s a few things you should keep in mind in case you happen to be one of them.

Keep Yourself Warm

Don’t even think about leaving the house without cycling gloves in cold weather. They’ll protect you from freezing and provide proper circulation. Shielding your feet from the cold is also crucial, but wearing warmer thermal socks sometimes isn’t enough. Consider adding an extra layer of warmth by wearing toe, leg and knee warmers.

Protect Your Head

30% of the body’s heat is lost through the head, so keeping it warm is a good way to keep your whole body warm. Don’t leave the house without ear bands, ear warmers or a cap during colder months. Needless to say, a hamlet is a must.

Be Ready for the Worst

There’s a higher chance you’ll get injured during your cycling adventures once it gets colder outside. If you’re going for a longer ride on uneven terrain, it’s a good idea to bring your mini bike kit or even a first aid kit. Don’t forget to dress in layers and bring windbreaker along.

You don’t need to be a professional athlete to give skiing a try, but you won’t excel in it if you haven’t hit the gym in forever.

Falling Over

There’s no nice way to put this – if you don’t know how to take a fall, skiing isn’t a sport for you because falling happens to be a crucial part of learning.

Skin Protection

If you think it’s impossible to get sunburns on a mountain in the middle of winter – think again!

Right Equipment

Don’t be tempted to buy your own equipment the first time around, since you can easily rent everything you need. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers and never forget a hamlet.

Staying in shape during the cold winter months is no easy feat because you’ve got chilly temperatures and frozen roads and standing in your way. Fortunately, some athletes thrive in these conditions. Here are a few exciting snow sports you could give a try if you happen to be one of them.

Fat Biking

Ice Boating

This is the sport for those brave at heart who like hanging out around their local lake even when it’s completely frozen.

Snowkiting
