Anxiety has become a hot topic in the wellness corners of social media over the last few years, and we have to admit that we’re happy to see what was once a highly sensitive subject starting to become destigmatized. Feelings of anxiety are something that almost everyone will experience at some point in life, but there are certain practices that can make them easier to manage. Stimulating the vagus nerve, in particular, activates the parasympathetic nervous system and is one of the most effective ways to bring the mind and body back into balance. Read on to learn more about a few different vagus nerve stimulation techniques.

Deep Breathing

Taking slow, deep breaths causes your diaphragm to move rhythmically, massaging the vagus nerve and sending a message to your body that it’s safe to relax. Practice by inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four, holding for a count of seven, and exhaling through your mouth for a count of eight. If these times feel like too much of a challenge, simply focus on extending the length of your exhales so that they’re longer than your inhales. Repeat this cycle 4-8 times. 

Physical Activity

Exercise, especially activities like yoga or tai chi that incorporate deep breathing, encourages better vagal tone and can help move the nervous system from a sympathetic fight-or-flight state toward the parasympathetic rest-and-digest. You don’t have to work up a sweat to reap the benefits—even passive asanas such as Child’s Pose or Happy Baby are enough. 

Cold Exposure

This one is a bit more controversial, and it should definitely be practiced with a healthy dose of caution, but research does show that exposing yourself to a few minutes of cold is an effective way to stimulate the vagus nerve. If you’re up for it, try ending your daily shower with a few seconds of cold water, or use a cold compress on your face as a gentler, more contained option.

Here is how you can train in the gym like Cristiano Ronaldo to boost your physical fitness.

Living Room Cup

While some people may believe that getting fit requires long, grueling workouts that go on for hours, Ronaldo has proven them wrong with his Living Room Cup workout. Each exercise included in this workout is just 45 seconds long, in which time you have to try to complete as many reps as possible.

The Ronaldo Circuit

If you’re looking to activate your leg muscles, then this is the workout for you. This workout involves eight barbell squats, 10 box jumps, eight broad jumps, eight jumping lunges, and 10 lateral bounds. Remember to repeat the circuit three times for maximum benefit.

Quick Cardio

After completing a full week of exercise, Ronaldo likes to fill his Sundays with a quick burst of high-intensity exercise. He does 10 sets of rope jumps for one minute each, followed by 10 sets of 50-meter sprints.

While we sleep, our bodies take the opportunity to regenerate and repair, but actually getting to sleep can be harder than it seems. If you have a hard time falling asleep, pillow placement can help. 

Sleeping on Your Back

If lying flat on your back is your ideal position, you want to keep your pillows to as few as possible. To prevent neck and back pain, place one pillow that is not too thick under your head to give support to your neck. This will also help to improve your posture while you doze.

Sleeping on Your Side

Once on your side, place your shoulder beneath your torso and measure the distance between your ear and the mattress. That should be the thickness of the pillow you choose or an indication of how many you need. The idea is to create alignment so that your body is basically in a standing position while horizontal. Popping a pillow between your knees will give support to your hips while placing one under your arm will offer additional comfort. 

Sleeping on Your Stomach

As comfortable as lying on your belly may be, it isn’t great for your posture. If you’re a stomach sleeper, it’s best to stick with just one pillow or no pillow at all to avoid straining your neck.

Anxiety has become a hot topic in the wellness corners of social media over the last few years, and we have to admit that we’re happy to see what was once a highly sensitive subject starting to become destigmatized. Feelings of anxiety are something that almost everyone will experience at some point in life, but there are certain practices that can make them easier to manage. Stimulating the vagus nerve, in particular, activates the parasympathetic nervous system and is one of the most effective ways to bring the mind and body back into balance. Read on to learn more about a few different vagus nerve stimulation techniques.

Deep Breathing

Taking slow, deep breaths causes your diaphragm to move rhythmically, massaging the vagus nerve and sending a message to your body that it’s safe to relax. Practice by inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four, holding for a count of seven, and exhaling through your mouth for a count of eight. If these times feel like too much of a challenge, simply focus on extending the length of your exhales so that they’re longer than your inhales. Repeat this cycle 4-8 times. 

Physical Activity

Exercise, especially activities like yoga or tai chi that incorporate deep breathing, encourages better vagal tone and can help move the nervous system from a sympathetic fight-or-flight state toward the parasympathetic rest-and-digest. You don’t have to work up a sweat to reap the benefits—even passive asanas such as Child’s Pose or Happy Baby are enough. 

Cold Exposure

This one is a bit more controversial, and it should definitely be practiced with a healthy dose of caution, but research does show that exposing yourself to a few minutes of cold is an effective way to stimulate the vagus nerve. If you’re up for it, try ending your daily shower with a few seconds of cold water, or use a cold compress on your face as a gentler, more contained option.

External Accountability

Now, we don’t mean self-accountability, the kind that preaches that we should all be ensuring that we’re being accountable for ourselves. That’s all good and all, but this isn’t where the real work is at. If people were able to be accountable for themselves, they wouldn’t have to diet in the first place. No, what we’re talking about is external accountability.

External accountability is having a buddy, or a nutritionist, or a doctor keeping tabs on you and making sure that you’re holding up your end of the diet. Not unlike a workout buddy, this person is there to support you and pick you up when you’re struggling.

There’s no denying that having someone like this is helpful, but some people would rather not have someone to answer to. If that sounds like you, consider giving it a try, because you may just find that the additional support will make all the difference in your growth.

Here is how you can train in the gym like Cristiano Ronaldo to boost your physical fitness.

Living Room Cup

While some people may believe that getting fit requires long, grueling workouts that go on for hours, Ronaldo has proven them wrong with his Living Room Cup workout. Each exercise included in this workout is just 45 seconds long, in which time you have to try to complete as many reps as possible.

The Ronaldo Circuit

If you’re looking to activate your leg muscles, then this is the workout for you. This workout involves eight barbell squats, 10 box jumps, eight broad jumps, eight jumping lunges, and 10 lateral bounds. Remember to repeat the circuit three times for maximum benefit.

Quick Cardio

After completing a full week of exercise, Ronaldo likes to fill his Sundays with a quick burst of high-intensity exercise. He does 10 sets of rope jumps for one minute each, followed by 10 sets of 50-meter sprints.

While we sleep, our bodies take the opportunity to regenerate and repair, but actually getting to sleep can be harder than it seems. If you have a hard time falling asleep, pillow placement can help. 

Sleeping on Your Back

If lying flat on your back is your ideal position, you want to keep your pillows to as few as possible. To prevent neck and back pain, place one pillow that is not too thick under your head to give support to your neck. This will also help to improve your posture while you doze.

Sleeping on Your Side

Once on your side, place your shoulder beneath your torso and measure the distance between your ear and the mattress. That should be the thickness of the pillow you choose or an indication of how many you need. The idea is to create alignment so that your body is basically in a standing position while horizontal. Popping a pillow between your knees will give support to your hips while placing one under your arm will offer additional comfort. 

Sleeping on Your Stomach

As comfortable as lying on your belly may be, it isn’t great for your posture. If you’re a stomach sleeper, it’s best to stick with just one pillow or no pillow at all to avoid straining your neck.
