You’re about 20 minutes deep into a workout session, and there’s only one thing on your mind: “I can’t do this.” You continue to replay this message in your head, and you find yourself losing focus and losing hope that you’ll be able to continue.

In addition, you’re also starting to doubt yourself on a much grander scale. You’re not just doubting this workout—you’re wondering if working out really is for you in general. If this scenario sounds familiar to you, you’re not alone. Here’s how to not just get through it, but to thrive through it as well.

Attack Mode

There’s an old saying in life that “the best defense is a good offense.” If you ask many coaches in professional sports, they may disagree with this concept. Indeed, many championships were built around the cornerstone of good defense. However, sometimes in life it’s crucial to flip the side into attack mode, and here’s why.

Telling Your Own Story

When you’re only focused on defense, you find yourself defending a story that’s being told about you. Another voice is telling you “you can’t do this”, and you find yourself defending that. But sometimes in life, you need to take what’s yours. You need to respond to this negative voice by telling your own story. You need to be aggressive and state clearly and boldly why you’re going to succeed. If you do so successfully, you’re now the one dictating the terms—and all other negative voices will diminish.
