Now that the temperatures are rising, it’s time to get some vitamin D and bring your workouts outside. Whether you’re running, walking, hiking, swimming, or cycling, exercising outside in the heat can be dangerous if you don’t take the necessary steps to stay safe. Here are five tips for how to safely work out in the heat of the summer.
Wear the Right Gear
Stay away from cotton and spandex as they trap heat and sweat. Instead, get tank tops and shorts made of moisture-wicking materials that are in light colors. These clothes will keep your skin dry and help you feel cooler. Also, wearing a hat and sunglasses isn’t a bad idea.
Exercise Early or Late
During the summer, exercise early in the morning or late in the evening. Avoid working out between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM because this is the hottest time of the day.
Find Shade
Find a place that’s out of direct sunlight and try and stay away from asphalt because it absorbs heat. No matter where you workout outside, wear sunscreen.
Stay Hydrated
Carry a water bottle with you when working out outside and throughout the day, remember to stay hydrated.
Drink Sports Drinks
If you’re exercising outside for longer than an hour, bring sports drinks to replenish electrolytes and sodium. Choose ones that aren’t high in sugar or added sweeteners and that aren’t processed.
