Miss the Gym? Try Outdoor Fitness Classes

Many states are starting to reopen businesses like retail stores, restaurants, and movie theatres, and gyms. But many people believe that the risks of getting coronavirus are high in gyms. What can you do if you’re sick of at-home workouts, but are worried about returning to gyms? You can take outdoor group fitness classes like pilates, yoga, or barre, which have the same health benefits as practicing in the gym or studio, but the open-air makes the chances of spreading the virus smaller.

In addition to having the open air, it’s easier to maintain social distancing measures outside because there is more room. When attending fitness classes outside, bring your own equipment like yoga mats, hand weights, towels, and a water bottle. Make sure you set up your things at least six feet away from other people and wear a mask before and after the class.

Low impact exercise classes like yoga and pilates are safer than HIIT or spinning because participants are less likely to breathe heavily and sweat and the instructors are more likely to talk in softer voices, making droplets less likely to spread into the air. Also when possible, try and set up the activity in a shaded area or have the class in the morning, so you don’t have to use fans, which can spread the virus.
