Want to know a sure-fire way to never get fit and healthy, or at least the way you want to? Compare yourself to others nonstop. This is a bit of an extreme statement, and there’s certainly a lot of grey area in between, but the sentiment comes from a very real place. When you compare yourself to others at the gym, you’re going to create so many obstacles on your path to success, and here’s why.

You’re Not Focusing On Yourself

When you compare yourself to others, you’re utilizing way too much mental energy on someone that’s not you. Working out and watching what you eat requires a lot of mental strength and focus—and this focus is incredibly hard to maintain if you’re not focusing wholly on yourself.

Loving Yourself More

There is something productive that can come from observing others. But this needs to come from a place of inspiration. This needs to make you feel good about yourself. If your observation of others makes you feel bad about yourself instead of the opposite, this is a big no-no. Start with loving yourself first and only then can you start to follow the guidance and inspiration of others.
