Jumping rope is one of the most underrate exercises you can do, and we’re about to give you a crash course about why. Many people are aware of the amazing benefits that jumping rope can provide for your body, and yet it seems to fall under the radar for so many others. If you’re thinking about jumping rope and would like an extra dose of encouragement, here’s why it’s incredibly good for your body.

Cardio

The truth is that the benefits for jumping rope are even greater than this article can cover—but we’ll start off with the basics. From a cardio perspective, it’s like the holy grail. It increase your heart rate, which enhances heart health and reduces the risk of heart disease in the process.

There are many different kinds of exercises you can do to get in better shape, and nowadays it seems like a hundred more get invented every year. But there are some classic exercises that never go out of style. Or, even if they are less “trendy”, they remain as effective as they ever were. Jumping rope is the kind of exercise that you did as a child in gym class but stopped doing when you got older because it just seemed silly. But here’s why it’s one of the most underrated exercises out there.

Full Body Workout

The cool thing about jumping rope is that it pretty much gives your entire body a workout. The main burn you’ll be feeling is in your calf muscles, but there are other muscle groups being activated as well, such as your glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, biceps, triceps, and abs.

Improve Athletic Performance

In addition to muscle building, jumping rope is an insanely effective cardio exercise. It’s incredibly effective at improving speed and jumping ability, but perhaps even more importantly, people who jump rope find that their endurance levels skyrocket.

Improve Balance and Coordination

There are so many benefits to jumping rope, and we’ve really only scratched the surface. But one more thing we feel compelled to add is the way that jumping rope helps with balance and coordination. This is a huge benefit for athletes of all sports, and a good way to put them ahead of the competition.

If you’re someone who likes working out from home, we admire your sheer tenacity and self-discipline. Home workouts are simply not for everyone. As convenient as they are, it takes a certain kind of mindset to shield yourself from all the distractions that exist at home. But if you’re struggling to focus with your home workouts, perhaps you just haven’t found the right exercise to do. This exercise may re-energize you in the way that counts.

Jumping Rope

Jumping rope may be one of the most underrated exercises you can do. It was one of those exercises your old gym teacher used to run with the class back when you were young. But as you got older, and coveted that six-pack, or those huge biceps, jumping rope sort of made way for things such as dumbbells.

However, jumping rope is an incredibly effective form of cardio. Not only that, but it strengthens your legs and core simultaneously in a way that’s hard to match with most workouts. When you take all those things into consideration and lump them all together, you have an easy-to-do workout that’s unparalleled.

Jump ropes are easily accessed, cheap, and mobile-friendly. It may not seem like it at the outset, or perhaps jumping rope looks “too childish”—but try doing it for five minutes straight and then see if you still think it’s so childish. It requires a lot of effort, but in the long can do wonders for your bodily health.

When it comes to working out, most of us do the same handful of activities—jogging, lifting weights, maybe some yoga here and there. If you’re adventurous, you might experiment with dance fitness, biking, or swimming. But there’s one truly fantastic workout that not nearly enough people do—jumping rope. Here are just some of the reasons why you should consider incorporating this fun workout into your fitness routine.

For Your Bones

Jumping rope is a load-bearing exercise that involves putting weight on your skeletal system again and again. This makes it really good for your bone health, keeping your bones stronger for longer. This is especially important for women since it’s more common amongst women to get osteoporosis.

For Your Heart

As you can imagine, jumping rope is also great cardio as it’s a plyometric, aerobic exercise. Plus, you can easily modulate the intensity by jumping rope faster or slower, so you can fit it to your individual cardiovascular endurance.

For Your Rhythm

Another big plus of jumping rope is that it’s great at helping you improve your rhythm and your coordination and balance, too. This means you’ll get better at controlling your body.

Jump ropes come in many shapes and sizes, and one of the most important differences between them is the material their cable is made of. They all come with different pros and cons and here are a few that you should take into consideration when buying a jump rope.

Cloth Cable

Cloth jump ropes are the most popular option on the market because they come with a low price tag. Usually made with cotton or nylon, they’re pretty lightweight, so they won’t give you as intense a workout as other types because they don’t add too much pressure on your arms and shoulders.

PVC Cable

Jump ropes with PVC or plastic cable are always a good idea because they’re pretty versatile. They’re beginner-friendly, but you can also use them for more advanced rope jumping and speed jumping because their light, thin cord makes it easy to perform these moves.

Beaded Cable

Beaded ropes can be pretty fun because they look colorful and can create interesting noise when they hit the ground. They’re not as affordable and beginner-friendly as the previous two options, but you can use them to add some weight to the workout and make it more intense.

Rope jumping is one of the most carefree full-body workouts on the market, but it can lead to joint pain if you’re not doing it right. If you’re looking for a way to make low-impact modifications to your jump rope routine, these tips will help you get there.

Proper Form

Poor technique is one of the main reasons why your rope jumping workouts are leading to joint pain. When done correctly and with a proper form, rope jumping involves gentle landing that won’t lead to excessive pain because you’re not slamming your feet into the ground.

Surface Choice

Not all types of surfaces are created equal when it comes to rope jumping, or other high-impact activities, for that matter. Try to avoid hard surfaces such as concrete, because they’ll increase the impact on your joints, leaving them more prone to pain and injury.

Too Much Too Soon

Just like with any workout, you have to give your joints enough time to recover. That’s why you should take it slow and gradually implement this routine into your workout schedule. You should also try to mix things up by including exercises that strengthen your leg muscles into your fitness routine.

Rope jumping is one of the most fun ways to burn some major calories pretty quickly, but it can be difficult to incorporate it into your home workout. Jumping rope indoors isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible either, and here’s a couple of ways to get it done.

Rearranging Your Furniture

If you don’t have enough room in your apartment to do a rope jumping workout, how about moving some furniture around? This is a great way to burn some calories before even starting your workout and it can serve as an amazing warmup and cooldown.

Jump Rope Mat

Even if you find enough space to jump rope, this workout routine can be pretty noisy. If you don’t want to disturb your neighbors, consider investing some extra cash into a jump rope mat, which will also help you avoid putting too much stress on your feet.

Cordless Jump Rope

If your apartment is too tiny and crowded for rope jumping, cordless jump ropes are your best bet. They consist of two handles with internal weights that simulate the feeling of turning the rope. You’ll still be jumping as much as during the regular rope jumping workouts, and that’s the entire point of this fitness routine.

Jumping rope is one of the best full-body workouts on the market, and Kaley Cuoco seems to agree. The Big Bang Theory actress shared several amazing workouts in the last few months and they all featured this basic piece of workout equipment.

Most recently, Cuoco posted a short compilation video of her rope jumping routine, and captioned it by writing, “My newest obsession during COVID/quarantine! All you need is 20 mins, a jump rope, and good music!”

In addition to doing regular forward jumps, she can also be seen jumping backward, doing crisscrosses, and high knees. This isn’t the first video she used to showcase her love for rope jumping—she also shared several workout clips alongside her trainer Ryan Sorensen, and this piece of equipment was featured in all of them.

What makes Cuoco’s latest video even more impressive is the fact she did the entire workout with her mask on. Some of her followers questioned her decision, but the actress explained she always wears a mask in enclosed spaces to protect herself and those around her.

Finding a home workout that’s effective, fun, and quick sounds like a mission impossible. Luckily, rope jumping checks all of these boxes, and here are a couple of reasons why it should become your go-to home workout.

Full-Body Workout

Rope jumping is one of the best full-body workouts because it activates several muscle groups at the same time. It’s much more fun than some more popular but less effective workouts, so getting motivated won’t be such a huge problem.

Super-cheap

If you can’t afford to go to the gym and don’t feel like paying for fancy online classes, rope jumping is your best option. Jumping ropes are super-cheap, and they’re your only investment since you can find a bunch of useful resources online.

Space Management

Jumping rope indoors can be tricky if you have a tiny apartment—and you’ll also be annoying your downstairs neighbors. If you have a garden or a big house, you won’t struggle to find space to do it. You can also use public spaces for your rope jumping sessions because it’s easy to maintain social distancing during these workouts.
