Maybe you’re brand new to working out and can’t wait to get started, but you love to keep your nails long and clean and are worried about how you’ll be able to continue to do so once you start working out. Or maybe you’ve been exercising for a long time and are feeling curious about getting fake nails for an event or growing your nails long, but don’t know if it will be possible to do so and continue your workout routine. If either of these situations applies to you, here are some tips for how you can maintain your long nails and your workout regimen.

Be Realistic

There are many, many people who work out with long nails, so it’s definitely possible. But you will need to be realistic about the length of nail you can maintain. Medium-long? Fine. Four-inch claws? Might not work out quite as well. Be ready to compromise.

Be Mindful of the Shape

Some nail shapes will be easier to maintain than others. Rounded shapes will probably be able to hold up to the strain of a workout better than pointer ones, which might also dig into your palm when you do things like grip a barbell.

Stay Strong

To help protect your nails a bit more from your workout, consider wearing thick polish or getting gel nails, which will be stronger than your natural nails and therefore be able to withstand more.
