Why You Shouldn’t Walk in Flip Flops

Picture this: you’re taking your dog outside for a walk and you need to grab a pair of shoes to throw on, what shoes do you go for? You’re probably going to reach for your flip flops, as they’re super easy to throw on. Flip flops are great for the beach, but they aren’t ideal for walks. They can actually lead to foot and ankle injuries. Here’s why you shouldn’t walk in flip flops and more practical alternatives.

The way you walk in flip flops is different than the way you walk in regular shoes as you take shorter steps in them while gripping the flip flops with your toes. This leads to a change in foot placement and posture as well as strain on your feet, knees, and back. Flip flops also have little sole and no arch support which can lead to plantar fasciitis, a walking injury. In addition to these injuries, you’re leaving your foot exposed which can cause you to get caught on something and to trip and fall, leading to more serious injuries ranging from stubbing your toe or breaking an ankle. Blisters can also happen, especially between the first and second toe where the strap is.

Going to the beach or on a short, walk is okay to do in flip flops, but for walks longer than 15 minutes, you should wear proper walking shoes. In the warmer months, sandals are a better option than flip flops, especially when they have lots of straps.
