If you’re an absolute gym rat, having a couple of drinks after work won’t make you miss your workout… but it probably should. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that booze and exercise don’t mix well, but some people think they’re losing nothing by trying out this disastrous cocktail.

Being a little bit tipsy doesn’t make you drunk, and you’ll use this as an excuse to hit the gym after a night out. The only problem is – alcohol can negatively influence your performance and stop you from reaping the fruits of your labor even if it doesn’t feel that way. Ask any expert and they’ll tell you the same thing. You should refrain from alcohol consumption before working out, and any other activity that requires concentration and balance, while you’re at it.

Alcohol is a depressant, meaning it will it slow you down and mess with your reaction time. Your balance and hand-eye coordination will be impaired after one too many sips and the same goes for your strength and endurance. If it feels like you’re falling apart after every workout, things will get even worse during the drunken ones. Booze will prolong recovery time and interfere with the way your body creates muscle growth. Alcohol is also a diuretic, so you should avoid it if you don’t want to spend half of your workout sesh in the bathroom. You gain nothing with #drunkgains and feeling superior for hitting the gym plastered doesn’t change that fact.
