Staying properly hydrated in the summer can be a difficult task, especially during your workouts. If running happens to be your go-to physical activity, getting enough water can become even more difficult, but here’s what you can do to stay properly hydrated.

Before the Run

Pre-hydration is equally important as staying hydrated during your run. Consider drinking between 16-20 ounces an hour or two before your run, and avoid alcohol a day before so you wouldn’t feel sluggish along the way.

Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated throughout your run is essential, and you can do it by drinking about 5–10 ounces of water every 15-20 minutes while running.

Hydration Options

There are many ways to stay hydrated during your run. Most people simply carry their water bottle with them, while others don’t want it to get in the way. Some experienced runners prefer camel packs and hydration belts, but they’re best avoided if you have a history of lower back pain.

Route Planning

If none of the previous hydration options sound good for you, carefully planning your route is the way to go. Plan a route where you can stop at several water fountains along the way if you don’t want to carry any extra weight with you.
