Do You Need to Stick to Your Rep Numbers?

When it comes to working out, one of the most common things people do is have a set number for each of their reps. For instance, doing 10 push-ups every morning, followed by a set of 20 curls—and then repeating the process. Everyone has their own version of what works for them, but we feel it’s important to ask the following question: Is it important to stick to our rep numbers?

Yes — For The Most Part

Most of the time, we think there’s something healthy and therapeutic about sticking to something. When you have a set number in your head, it creates a concrete goal in your mind. Something tangible to strive for that you can track whether or not you hit it.

It allows you to fall into a trance where it sometimes doesn’t even feel like hard work—because you’re achieving what you set out to do. As long as you settle on a good balanced goal, you should be fine.

The Exceptions

There are exceptions you can make for yourself, such as when there’s a special event like a wedding or party that you’re rushing to get to. You can be flexible with yourself on these occasions, as long as you remember to get back to your main routine.
