Healthy Butter Alternatives to Use in Baked Goods

Whether you don’t have butter on hand, you’re looking to go more plant-based, or you’re trying to cut calories, there are many alternatives to butter. These alternatives are healthier and they work really well in baked goods. Chances are you have many of these in your pantry already.

Applesauce

Applesauce is often used to replace oils and it works as an alternative to butter as well. It’s best in cake-like recipes and all you need to do is replace the butter with applesauce in your recipes.

Avocado

Mashed avocado is a great butter replacement in cookies and breads. You’ll get a softer, moister baked good that’s dairy-free. Avocado can also be used instead of butter for a buttercream frosting.

Canola Oil

For recipes that call for melted butter, canola oil can work as a replacement. Try replacing the butter with canola oil in cookies.

Yogurt

You can reduce the amount of butter in your cookies by using half the amount with half the amount of yogurt. So, if the recipe calls for one cup of butter, use a half a cup of butter and half a cup of yogurt.

Prune Purée

This low-calorie alternative can completely replace butter in recipes and it’s especially tasty in recipes with chocolate and cinnamon.
