Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medicinal system whose name comes from Sanskrit and means “the science of life.” The main principle of Ayurveda is that everyone has within them certain energies called “doshas.” If these doshas are brought out of balance through things like lifestyle and diet, we may experience negative symptoms. There are exercises Ayurvedic practitioners recommend to bring each dosha back into balance. Here are a few of our favorites for each dosha:

Kapha

The Kapha dosha is comprised of earth and water elements and people with a Kapha imbalance may tend to have allergies or feel sluggish. What is recommended in this case is to practice invigorating movements that will bring heat back into the body. Zumba dance or running are both great options.

Pitta

Pitta in Ayurveda includes fire and water, and an imbalance of pitta may lead to symptoms like heartburn or sweating more than usual. It’s recommended that any exercise be cooling and calming rather than anything that will create more heat in the body. Gentle hikes or long walks in nature are perfect for the Pitta type.

Vata

The Vata dosha is comprised of air and space, or “ether.” If you’re someone who is experiencing a Vata imbalance, you may have symptoms like dry skin or cracking joints. Ayurveda teaches that people with excess Vata need slow, grounding exercises such as yin yoga or weight training.
