When trying to lead a healthier lifestyle, many people follow specific diets or track their food intake to meet a calorie count. But, food is about so much more than calories, it’s about nutrients, enjoyment, satisfaction, and nourishment. To have a diet that works for you, it’s important to make better food choices throughout the day and here are some tips on how to do that.
Breakfast: Add Fiber and Micronutrients
Your breakfast should include protein, fat, and carbohydrates as well as micronutrients and fiber. Instead of focusing on the calorie content of your meal, add healthy fats from avocado and Greek yogurt and substitute white toast for whole-grain toast to increase the fiber.
Lunch: Pay Attention to Portions and Make Healthy Substitutions
Lunch is important for helping you get through the workday and you don’t want to leave lunch feeling bloated or heavy. Pay attention to the portion size and try and avoid processed meats and cheeses as well as greasy foods. Instead of eating a full sandwich, try eating only half and pairing it with a salad which will increase the amount of fiber, vitamins, and minerals you consume.
Dinner: Stay Clear of Processed Foods
Opt for more nutrient-dense foods and replace processed meats with fish, chicken, or steak which has more protein and less calories. Also instead of having mashed potatoes, go for a sweet potato or a baked potato.
