Are you new to yoga and trying to figure out which type of class is right for you? There are tons of types of yoga and the four most popular are Ashtanga yoga, Bikram yoga, Yin yoga, and power yoga. This is how these styles differ.
Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga combines breath with movement which will have you breaking a sweat while your body tones up. These classes use the same poses in the same order until you’ve mastered the poses and can move on to harder moves.
Bikram Yoga
Bikram is what you think of when someone says hot yoga—the studios are heated to around 105 F, allowing for improved circulation and for the body to release its toxins. The classes are 90 minutes and they use the same 26 poses.
Yin Yoga
Yin holds poses for longer periods of time and uses fewer poses. Each class will use different poses that target areas of the body with the goal of reducing stress and increasing your flexibility.
Power Yoga
Often referred to as “fitness-based” yoga, power yoga studios are usually heated to around 90 F. The poses are similar for each class, but the instructor puts them in a new order. You’ll work on your balance, strength, and flexibility.
