If you’ve never taken one before, going to a yoga class for the first time can be a little intimidating. But don’t worry; we’ve all done it, felt awkward and confused, fallen in love, and gone back for more. And now we’re here to share a bit of the wisdom we’ve picked up along the way. Here are the things you should know before your first yoga class.

What to Wear

One of the biggest questions you might have is what to wear to your first yoga class. Don’t worry, you don’t have to spend a fortune at Lululemon just because you’re going to one yoga class. As long as what you wear is comfortable, allows you free range to move, and won’t fall off when you contort yourself into various poses, you should be fine.

Come Early

We highly recommend showing up to your first yoga class early. That way, you’ll have time to complete any necessary registration procedures, get your bearings, and tell the teacher that it’s your first class (they’ll be gentler on you that way).

Just Keep Breathing

More than any of the poses or the postures, yoga is really about breathing. Any time something is hard, just breathe through it. Listen carefully to your instructor’s cues about when to breathe in and out. It really is important.

When in Doubt…

If all else fails, know that you can always go to child’s pose. There’s no shame in it, and in fact, it’s encouraged to take this resting posture instead of pushing yourself to do something you’re not ready for.
