How to Tell Your Trainer You’re Done With Them

Have you ever run into a situation where you need to “break up” with your trainer? Unfortunately, this can be just as awkward as it is to break up with a significant other. At the same time, there are specific ways to do it so as not to hurt their feelings, or even create a bad reputation for yourself within the gym circles. If you’re looking to end a trainee-trainer relationship, here’s the best way to do it without creating bad blood.

Keep It Strictly Professional

There seems to be a trend nowadays where trainers like to develop personal bonds with their trainees, but this is a one-way ticket to disaster, especially if you run into a situation like this where you want to end it with them. That’s why if you need to fire them, explain that everything about your decision is strictly professional. It’s their style you don’t vibe with, not their personality (we trust you to figure out a way to convey that those two things aren’t actually the same thing).

You Can Still Be Their Friend

Perhaps the best way to “break up” with your trainer is to keep things light, and if done right, maybe you can even stay friends with them. If you were already tight with one another, maybe this can be a way to solidify the idea that this truly was just a professional disparity, and you’d be totally cool with grabbing a protein shake with them someday.
