Strava is one of the most popular workout apps with passionate runners and cyclists, but it turns out these two activities weren’t ruling the world in 2020. Strava’s annual “Year in Sport” report is here, and it seems that walking was our favorite outdoor activity this year.

Strava reported that running, cycling, and indoor workouts experienced a 1.5-2x increase in popularity, but they couldn’t compete with outdoor walks. This activity experienced the most significant rise, and Strava reported a 3x rise in uploads when it came to walking.

Walking wasn’t the only trend ruling the world in 2020. Virtual competitions and communities were all the rage this year, especially Strava’s monthly 5K challenge that attracted over one million athletes in May alone.

The postponement of real-life marathons and races didn’t stop Strava users from taking place in virtual ones and breaking their personal records. 55% of active runners using this app logged their new personal best time in 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon races in 2020.

Running solo also experienced a huge surge, and Strava reported that 3x as many marathons were run alone this year when compared to 2019.
