What You Need to Know About Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa yoga is a modern take on classical yoga. It was created by K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. This yoga style is very energetic and focuses on synchronizing breath and movements.

Vinyasa yoga classes are very different among themselves. That’s because vinyasa yoga doesn’t rely on fixed positions and movements like some other yoga types. Each class is unique and helps develop a balanced body and prevent repetitive motion injuries that can happen over time.

Vinyasa’s philosophy celebrates the temporary nature of life. The name vinyasa comes from nyasa, which means “to place,” and vi, which means “in a special way.” This tells us that vinyasa yoga is a mindful practice of body movements. You could also say that in vinyasa, our external movements express the way we think and feel.

Vinyasa yoga is sometimes called Flow yoga. That’s because you move from one posture to another using your breath. It’s the opposite of classes where students do a posture, then break it out before doing the next. Vinyasa is all about the flow between the postures and over time you become more graceful in it.
